How do I connect my new HD LCD TV optical audio output to my prehistoric but extremely good home stereo hi fi?
I have a new TV - but I didn't check the audio outputs before I took it home - then I found it only has an optical digital audio output socket. Now I want to hook it up to my hifi stereo system. (The TV sound quality is very poor.)
Is there any way to link the new and the old?

HDTV is a 5.1 sound system. The TV cannot feed a stereo unless it has left/right audio output jacks.
You need a 5.1 receiver and a 5.1 set of speakers to be compatible with that TV.
Move the Stereo into another room and look into a name-brand $500 'box' system for the TV. Make sure the box system has a big, black receiver with lots of spare connections, a self-powered subwoofer and 5 small, monitor style speakers.
Do NOT be tempted by the crappy "Home Theater Systems" sold by Sony, Philips, Samsung, et al. as these usually do NOT accept feeds from outside sources. They basically are glorified DVD players.
I put a link to a $380 and $600 version of some decent Onkyo systems.
While the speakers are cheap and not accurate as your music speakers - they actually do a decent job on TV and movie soundtracks.
