Creating a window blind mural is a great way to dress up a window. It creates a lot of visual interest and is a nice way to personalize your space. Window blind murals can be a time consuming home improvement project and may take longer than you expected. Here are some tips on creating your very own window blind mural.
The first thing you should do when considering a window blind mural is to research what types of blinds are the easiest and most conducive to window blind murals. Window shades are probably the easiest to paint on. Vertical blinds are nice also because they have more surface area on which to paint.
Using acrylic paint when doing a window blind mural home improvement project is your best bet. It adheres to these surfaces well and doesn't rub off easily. You can also use different glazes to achieve different looks.
Purchase sponges and brushes that are of good quality to paint your window blind mural. If you use cheap brushes and sponges, you will not achieve the look that you are after. Higher quality materials may cost more, but they will be well worth it in the end. They will be much easier for you to work with and will ultimately last much longer.
Make sure your blind or shade is clean before you begin your window blind mural. Even small specks of dust can wreak havoc on such a delicate home improvement project. Using a white or off white surface will help you get the best results.
You should thoroughly research the subject you will be painting. Make sure the window blind mural scene is something you will enjoy looking at for a long time. Draw inspiration from things that you enjoy. If you love the beach, a beach scene might be perfect for you. But if the mountains are more to your liking, choose that. Nature or landscape scenes are the most popular choices, however, if you are painting a window blind mural to compliment a specific decor, it would also be appropriate to choose that theme. For example, if your window blind mural will be in a little girl's room that is decorated in fairies, a fairy scene would work beautifully.
It is easier if you paint your background before you begin getting more detailed. Even if it is as simple as painting a blue sky and green grass. This gives you a backdrop to work with and you can add more detail to your window blind mural as you go along. It really helps to create dimension and depth to your painting.
One of the simplest ways to create a window blind mural is to trace it lightly on your surface and then paint it. This way you are sure to get just the look you want. This is great for people who love the idea of this type of home improvement project, but are not comfortable with drawing or painting free hand. You can use a stencil or even an overhead projector.
A window blind mural is a fun and creative way to add some personality to a space. It is perfect for apartment dwellers or people who may be moving soon, since there is no permanent change to the walls or window. If you want to change it, you simply remove your home improvement masterpiece and move on.

Can a home thater projector be a replacement for an everyday t.v.?
Would there be anything wrong with that?
I'd like to offer a somewhat less negative view. My view is that a projector is a viable alternative to a TV. My wife and I rarely use our TV anymore (and then only for SD programming), and use our 2500 lumen Canon SX-60 front projector exclusively for HDTV and DVD viewing.
The cost of running a projector is in the order of $0.20 / hr ... BUT when you compare this to other costs of life (e.g. car insurance typically $2-$3 /day; cable/satellite programming $2+/day; renting or buying DVDs $5-$25 / time; cup of coffee $1; electricity $2-$4 / day) this is NOT very expensive. Personally I get 20 cents/hr pleasure out of a big screen vs a small screen anyday.
Now, consider what you mean by "replacement for a regular TV". We watch HDTV and DVDs on a front projector exclusively. We watch 2-3 hr maximum per day, and at this rate expect to get at least 3 years use out of the bulb. We no longer find small screen viewing attractive, so only rarely use our 30" HDTV.
Bulb life can be shorter than expected but other than projector design issues (like inadequate cooling which the user can't do anything about) there are ways to help ensure bulb life is not shortened unecessarily. For example:
- never "short cycle" the bulb (if you turn the projector on leave it on for at least 5 minutes before turning it off).
- Ensure filters are kept clean to maximize cooling.
- Run on a UPS so that if a power cut occurs you can still turn off and cool down slowly.
As for dark or light rooms for watching, I don't really see a big difference. I don't like TV in a lighted room - period. And while a dark room improves the picture on our projector (and we normally run in HT mode with a dark room), we can run it in a brighter mode with lights on and still get a good picture.
I'll admit that there are conditions under which a projector would be a poor choice as a TV replacement (e.g. low brightness projector, extremely bright room), but for me watching HDTV or DVDs on a TV is no longer attractive and the marginal extra cost of running a projector to give a truely immersive experience is well worthwhile in my view.
