Is it safe to set your DVD recorder on top of the tv?
I just bought a dvd/vcr recorder and was reading the owner's manual. It states "do not place unit directly on top of the TV set." It also says to avoid strong magnetic fields. I have my stereo on top of my entertainment center and my current dvd/vcr player setting directly on top of the TV with the cable box on top of it. I've never had any problems recording on VHS with this arrangement but was wondering if this might intefere with the DVD recording. There is no other shelf large enough to set the new machine. Is it safe for me just to put the new one where the old player is now?
The issue is with the VCR part of your player and conventional CRT type of TV's. The TV has a degaussing coil around the CRT to keep it demagnetized. When you turn the TV on it generates a fairly strong magnetic field that slowly decays. This field could degrade the VCR tapes. It shouldn't be a problem with the DVD part.
