There seems to be a lot of people around who still use, or want to be able to play cassette tapes, and are looking to buy a new or second hand cassette deck. After all you may want to be able to transfer your old cassette tapes to your PC, convert them to MP3 format or burn your tunes to CD.

Before you buy, here is some vital information that will make your purchase easier and could save you money in the long run.

When looking at new cassette decks the first thing you should ask yourself is:

Do I want to transfer cassette to cassette.

Will I be making new recordings.

Will I be mainly playing back my old tapes, perhaps with a view to transferring cassette to CD.

If you need to transfer cassette tape to cassette tape then you will be looking for a twin or dual cassette deck.

Surprisingly enough dual cassette decks are not that much more expensive than single decks. The reason is their quality. The majority of dual decks use just one motor to drive both decks. Even the top brands like Pioneer and Technics use this system. In my experience, having spent many years repairing and servicing cassette decks, the mechanisms tend to be rather flimsy (cheap!) increasing wow and flutter figures especially when using both cassette decks at once. Any problems with tight tapes and varying loads on one deck, will affect the smooth running and accuracy of the other deck.

For this reason I am not a big fan of dual cassette decks unless you spend a lot of money on a really high quality deck.

There is one advantage of a single motor dual deck, all be it small, is when recording cassette to cassette. Because the same motor drives both decks, regardless of whether the deck is in normal or high speed, the cassette copy should run at exactly the same speed as the original tape so the pitch of your music should be identical to the original. Ideally I would use two single cassette decks although you will not have the advantage of high speed dubbing. However if you still want a dual cassette deck I would suggest you buy new.

If you want to make new recordings, then unless you are sure about the quality of a second hand deck, then once again I would suggest you buy new.

If your main objective is playing back your old cassette tapes maybe to transfer cassette to CD, then it would be best to buy a single deck and look at second hand. You will need to check out the condition of a second hand cassette deck. Things like tape head wear for instance although many decks use ferrite or glass tape heads which hardly wear at all, in which case tape head wear would not be an issue, but there is the problem of the mechanics i.e. motors, gears, clutches, belts and pinch rollers. If there are problems with any of these then you will get high wow and flutter, and incorrect running speed. Always take along a cassette tape recorded with music (speech will not show up problems well) know well. Listen to the high frequencies (treble) - is it clear? Listen to long notes - are they steady, and do not sound wowy or warbly? Let the cassette deck run for as long as you can and listen for any change in, or excess mechanical noise. All these tips will tell you if the deck is worth buying or not!

It is worth mentioning that if there is some head wear, tape playback quality is not affected as much by tape head wear as record, so this should not be an issue unless the heads are very badly worn.

When students in your classroom are not progressing at the same rate or better as their peers, supplement their learning with researched based strategies that increase achievement. These are also Tier Two interventions for Response to Intervention.

Need Expert Advice on changing sprockets of a 7 speed cassette body of a Road bike?

My current 7 speed cassette sprocket configuration ratio is as follows: 14-16-18-20-22-24-28. What i need is this type of ratio: 12-14-16-18-21-24-28. So basically i want to buy a 12 and 21 tooth sprocket and remove the 20,22. I have never delt with bike repairs all that much. I need to know if this kind of change is possible? Or do I need to buy an entirely new cassette? Are there any other precautions I should consider?

It might be much simpler to look for a new cassette in the cheapie variety. Nashbar has a big sale right now and you might be able to pick up one of their house brand cassettes that has what you want. You can drive out the rivets and separate cogs....you may or may not need to pick up some spacers from the bike shop....depends on how the cassette is put together.

I'm not sure if Sram still offers these parts, but as recently as two years ago they still listed individual cogs for replacement in just about every tooth. Most of Sram's cassettes have the upper cogs held together with three teeny screws rather than the rivets everyone else uses, so it makes it easy. You might check with a shop to see if they can still get them, or pick up a cheap Sram cassette on sale, or even ask shops if they have any in the scrap bin (I've seen a number of them go out for recycling along with all the broken parts).

Since most mfr's use the standard Shimano spline pattern, as long as you can get the cogs you want, you can assemble your gearing the way you like it. The only thing you'll need to be concerned about is using the same size spacers if you need to pick up extra ones.

I'd respectfully disagree that you should replace other parts in your drive train right now...unless they're verifyably worn out and need it. In my experience, cogs last a looong time. It's the chain and rings that need replacement more frequently. I've never kept track, but it seems like I'll go through 4 or 5 chains, 2 rings, and one cassette before everything is new at the same time. The smartest thing to do is actually measure them for wear...you can get the tools or you can have a shop do it for you (usually for free).

Why do speaker cables hook up the way they do?

I never got this. In order to secure something properly a jack should be used. Why do speaker wires and receivers not have regular jacks to hook up to each other? Why do they make it that you can only fasten the knobs in the back of the receiver to hold the wires? It seems like such backwards thinking!

Unlike the other connections on the back of the receiver, speakers need a significant amount of current and a very low-resistance connection. Mashing down wire under a screw clamp is actually a very good way to do that.

The spring clips on a lot of cheaper receivers and speakers, not so much.

RCA plugs do have good current capacity but they aren't really compatible with the heavier speaker wire. You also wouldn't want to risk someone plugging the output from their DVD player into a speaker output by accident.

Some equipment does use "five way" binding posts that can take banana plugs, but then you have to put banana plugs on the ends of your speaker wires. Most do not come that way and most add-on plugs use very small screw clamps that don't provide as low-resistance or reliable a connection as the simple wire-under-screw-clamp scheme.

A lot of audiophiles with high end gear prefer to use speaker wires terminated in spade lugs. These are crimped onto the ends of the wires and then used with the screw terminals, or even with the five-way binding posts. These really provide the lowest resistance. If you get a good crimp it's very reliable, too, as there is no possibility of stray wire strands shorting to each other or to the receiver rear panel.

Professional gear has used a lot of different connectors for speaker wires over the years. Lately they have been moving to "Speakon" connectors, a modified version of XLRs. This is an excellent connector for the job, but it is too large to put six or eight of them on the back of a home theater receiver. They could be used at the speaker end, though.

Sony-Ericsson's collaborations in camera phones didn't quite invent the category with their original CyberShot designs, but they were one of the first innovators in the market segment. That tendency for innovation, a synergistic blend of two different design aesthetics. Ericsson, of course, is known for practical designs, and Sony is renowned for defining digital media experiences in small packages, dating back to the original Walkman tape cassette player.

The K770i is an evolutionary modification of their earlier CyberShot product line; rather than a revolutionary one. It doesn't add anything as amazing as, say, an iPhone's user interface, but then, it's not meant to. It's a solid "candy bar" format phone, only 14 mm thick; its buttons are large and well placed, and it has a 240x320 pixel screen that's bright and good enough for showing off snapshots.

The 3.2 megapixel camera is slightly beyond middle of the pack for camera phones; the Nokia N95 has a 5 megapixel one, and like all camera phones, the lack of dedicated optics keep it from being a true photographer's camera. On the other hand, picture quality is quite good, and the color and saturation levels are more than good enough for the usual use for a camera mobile. It has some rudimentary picture editing capabilities in the device, and Sony Ericsson has done a good job of integrating camera viewing, file management, and sending pictures by the phone itself.

The picture viewing application is good, but not jaw-droppingly so. The real prize here is that it's a solid combination of camera, phone and music player that's small enough to be shoved into a jeans pocket and run with.

As a phone, sound quality and reception were adequate to good. People complained that the onboard microphone muffled the low tones on conversations, and we were able to get predictable results on cell phone coverage when running around with it in day-to-day life. Battery life is rated at 6 hours of talk time, and we didn't have anything that disabused us of the notion.

Final verdict? It's a very good example of what it is, and while it isn't quite the form factor trend setter that Sony Ericsson's ads make it out to be, it doesn't really need to be. If you're looking for a small phone that's a more than good enough snapshot camera, this is one to seriously consider.

Whats woodstock cassette tapes worth?

Back in 1969, I bought the dual cassette tapes of woodstock, I have never opened them, they are still in the plastic case with the plastic wrap on them, can anyone tell me if they worth anything, or should I just open and use them?

No! Don't! First put them on ebay or something or some music nerd in an independent record store...you could cash some coin...there are alot of hippie teens who come from rich families...they're called Ja-faican (esp. with dreads)...I would pay 20 bucks for them myself. Not to mention retired hippies nowadays in their 50s-60s looking for a little nostalgia.

where can you get cassette tape to cd transferer in the philippines?

i want to transfer all my cassette tapes to CD format but its quite expensive when i do it in studios... do you know where to buy this gadgets like

Like many of us, there are occasions when I fuss and fume over how slow a web page is loading or how long it's taking to download a file. And, since I'm a programmer by trade, I also mumble to myself at times about how limited the command set is for a particular programming language or how slow a particular PC is at updating a large database file. At times like that however, I can calm myself by closing my eyes and thinking back to when I first started working with computers.

In 1972, fresh out the army (and one semester of grad school) I decided to move to Tulsa. My aunt had an accounting practice and was trying to computerize, and I thought it would be interesting to help her do that while I looked for a job. After a good deal of research I suggested that she should buy a Litton 1241; it seemed reasonably simple to operate and it had a number of software packages that came with it. The local sales rep had sold quite a few of them and his customers included several accountants, so it seemed like a perfect fit.

Unfortunately my aunt had no idea of how to use a computer, so I decided to stay around a little longer and try to get some of her workload transferred to her bright, shiny new computer. And it was a real whiz-bang of a computer for the time. It featured a magnetic drum memory that could hold 64 data items and it had 128 program registers, each of which could hold four instructions. There was no monitor of course -- the printer doubled as the input display. And since the internal memory was volatile (your data disappeared when you shut off the computer), the 1241 also had a paper tape reader/punch. All your data files were punched onto paper tape when you finished a job, and were read back in through the paper tape reader the next time you ran that job. The 1241 also came with a free electric paper tape roller-upper thingy to keep your tapes neatly rolled into reels.

Actually the 1241 was pretty fast once you got your data loaded from tape, assuming you could make do with those 64 data registers. Any sizable application had to be done in stages; for example a job cost package that was available from Litton had to done in a number of steps with pauses in between to punch intermediate data to tape and then read it back in for the next step. All in all, not exactly a speed burner if you were running anything very complicated.

After a while, I managed to teach myself to program the darn thing and eventually wound up being offered a job with the local Litton office. I got plenty of experience there with the venerable 1241, but over the next few years Litton made great strides in modernizing their computers. First came the 1251, which was basically a 1241 with a larger drum. I helped run a demo for the manager of the local Coca-Cola bottling plant and he was so impressed with the speed of the new system (it sorted 2000 items in just over two hours) that he bought one on the spot.

Next came the Litton 1281, which featured magnetic ledger cards. No more messy paper tape rolls; the 1281 stored data on magnetic ledger cards. It seemed like a giant leap forward at the time and we immediately arranged a demo for a big-time prospect. The sales manager and I practiced running through the complete demo the night before our presentation and everything went smoothly. The next morning at the actual demo absolutely nothing worked -- like the frog in the old Warner Brothers cartoon the 1281 just sat there and bleeped occasionally. It turned out that there were a set of "micro routines" on a special ledger card that had to be loaded each time after the initial use of the 1281.

The 1281 was followed a couple of years later by the 1300; a much more modern system. The 1300 had a monitor and cassette tape drives for storage. It was so impressive that we actually got an appointment with Walmart and went to their headquarters to make a presentation to them. When they showed us into their data processing area it seemed like old times -- by golly, they were storing everything on paper tape. There were giant loops of paper tape everywhere and the chad from the paper punches was scattered all over the floor. Walmart didn't buy from us but they did modernize their computer department shortly after that -- which probably had a lot to do with Walmart growing by leaps and bounds over the next several decades.

Once thing I forgot to mention; newer isn't always better. On one occasion we tried to update a construction company in Oklahoma City that had a Litton 1230 (basically a teletype with a mag drum and paper punch attached). The customer turned us down flat. The boss's wife ran their job cost estimating program and worked on the front desk and the only way she could tell when to go start another estimate running was when the 1230 rang it's teletype bell at the end of each job. We could offer all kinds of new features but we couldn't ring that bell for her.

Programming those systems was fun too. It definitely required some ingenuity at times to produce complex programs with only a handful of commands and storage registers available. Do I miss those days? You bet -- right up until I decide to go look through some merchandise on Amazon or check out the latest stuff on YouTube. Maybe the best part of reminiscing about those times is that it reminds me of how far we've come and makes me much more tolerant of that slow-loading web page.

WHAT TYPE OF GREASE FOR LUBRICATING VCR MECHANISM?

I would like to lubricate the guide roller tracks and cassette basket slots on my old but still functioning JVC vcrs but am not sure of which grease to use. Someone suggested white lithium grease as long as it's not petroleum based so as to be compatible with plastic parts. I have an old tube of Siloo white lithium grease (#14) but there is no mention on it of its composition. Anyone know if this product is compatible for this application? Any other product suggestions. Thanks.
