Mounting ceiling speakers in a wall?

I have a 7.1 surround sound receiver. I bought a 5.1 speaker set and am buying 2 additional speakers for the middle satellite speakers. I need in-wall speakers for logistic reasons. Most of the in-wall speakers are too big for the location I need but the round shape of the in-ceiling speakers would work.

I did the same thing using a 9.1 system. Basically make sure of the depth of the wall. Some inner walls are not deep enough to accommodate the speaker. I used Polk, a little more expensive but the end result was satisfying considering that you don't want to be cutting into your drywall and running cable more than once.

I got a phone call from a magazine writer who was working on a story. Turns out that Stanford University put out a research study looking at what barriers exist for women in the corporate world. They talked to something like 1,000 of their MBA grads - not new grads, but people who went through Stanford over many years - and asked them what was keeping women out of the top ranks of corporations. Here's what they reported:

There is no glass ceiling. Women themselves are opting out of the top jobs, for lifestyle reasons or because they don't want the pressure.

So, asked the writer, "What do you think about that?"

Have you ever heard a person sputter on the phone? That's what I did. I couldn't find words for a moment.

"Bleeping brilliant!" I said. "That is magnificent - there is no glass ceiling, it's we ourselves who are opting out of senior leadership roles because, you know, there's so much pressure. That's perfect, because companies who accept that wisdom can dismantle their mentoring programs, save the money that they might be spending on their high-potential women, and stop wringing their hands when women in senior roles bail at the next-to-highest rung of the ladder."

He laughed, either in sympathy or amusement at my apoplexy, or both. Now mind you, I haven't seen the study, so I'm one degree removed from the conclusions (much less the data), but here's my take on the notion that women opt out of senior leadership spots rather than being kept out of them by their leaders:

Yes - we do. We leave. Because of the pressure? Oh, give me a break. Not because of the pressure - because of BS level that comes with the territory.

Think about senior-level roles in corporations these days. I don't think that there are more politics in actual politics than there are in major corporations. It's a tough way to live - watching your back, attending to your alliances, spouting the party line and fighting your battles behind the scenes. Generally I stay away from sweeping generalizations about one gender or the other. But I feel comfortable saying this: women have a lower threshold for idiotic, posturing, political, inauthentic behavior, day in and day out. Women have a cognitive dissonance alarm that gets louder and louder day by day so that they finally conclude, "This isn't me. I can't keep doing this. I can't keep my mouth shut, go along, and play the good soldier for one more day, much less another fifteen years until retirement." And that's just it - they're done.

They blow the whistle, like Sherron Watkins did at Enron, or they just take off. Can't take the pressure? Are you kidding me? Women who make it to the next-to-the-top rung of the ladder, the ones who are even in the position to decide between sticking it out and leaving, have already taken more pressure than most guys can even comprehend. They've smiled at enough gratuitous comments - walked the tightrope between telling the truth and drinking the company Kool-Aid - and slashed their way through enough uncharted territory to write a best-selling novel, or two. The most senior women I know are uniformly tough, articulate, smart, and incredibly flexible - they wouldn't have survived the last twenty years of corporate life any other way.

So why do they leave? Because they look at that top spot and say, It's not worth it. There is nothing there that I need, and the cost - to myself, to my family, to my relationships - is too high. It's not the blasted pressure! It's the internal compass that says, Enough. Can women run corporations successfully? Of course they can. But so many corporations don't hold enough promise, enough room to mature, to evolve, to be the sorts of places that successful women want to run, that the grass is simply greener in too many other places. At home, with kids or horses or whatever stirs you. In a startup venture, writing a novel, or starting a foundation for Somalian children. The need to be in control doesn't always overcome the need to do something important and useful, plus the need to be herself, and so the women depart. Wimps!

If I were a CEO looking at this study, I would say, This is wrong. If women truly are leaving corporations at the point of the pyramid just below the tip, that's a waste. We hired them, we trained them and entrusted big chunks of the business to them, and now we've lost them, so something is clearly amiss. Aren't our customers women? Aren't our shareholders women, and don't we believe, on the evidence and in our guts, that women should help to run this organization? So what is happening internally here that is turning them off, and how do we fix it?

That's the takeaway I'd love to see from this study. Let's not conclude,

There's no glass ceiling, so if women are leaving our organizations, what can we do about it? Oh well - better get back to work.

Let's say instead,

If the barrier isn't made of glass, but rather some toxic chemical that women won't expose themselves to, let's get rid of it and clean up our act. After all, if something is noxious to women, can it be healthy for anyone?

A recent trend in home cinemas is the use of both "in wall" and even "in ceiling speakers" that offer the listener the benefit of an extra dimension in their audio listening experience, while storing the satellite speakers themselves out of sight and out of mind. The appeal of having speakers mounted in wall cavities is particularly appealing in modern apartments where a minimalist approach is applied. The fact is that without encroaching on space, some fantastic results are possible and are well within the means of the average home cinema owner.

Unlike a normal speaker that is mounted in a cabinet, the diver of an in-wall or in-ceiling speaker is mounted in a frame that is set into the wall directly. What often happens is that you receive additional bass from the wall itself that would be missing from a speaker of the same size. The only difference between an in-ceiling speaker and an in-wall speaker is that the in-wall speaker is positioned in the wall and the in-ceiling speaker, the ceiling above. For some reason in-ceiling speakers are generally round and in-wall speaker rectangular in size.

When installing wall speakers, the most fundamental factor is the rigidity and size of the speaker cavities. It is important to get the job done properly or the frequency response of the overall system may be adversely affected.

The speaker technology itself should be carefully considered too, although other than choosing a speaker set of a good size, mounted speaker sets are compared in exactly the same way as any other speakers. Factors to consider are: frequency response, power handling, efficiency and features.

Probably the most crucial factor when installing ceiling speakers is their positioning as this can directly affect the quality of the sound. While this may be true of just about any speaker system, it applies more so for a ceiling installation as it is difficult to change the position of the speakers once they've been set up. To provide for positional changes, many systems have adopted a pivotal bass unit and tweeter. While a conventional in ceiling system will only direct the sound in a downward direction, the ability to pivot speakers allows you to focus the sound to suit your position in the room.

Whichever actual speaker system you end up choosing, the advantages of a surround sound wall and ceiling speakers are clear, enabling you to enjoy top quality audio output within a minimalist design blending seamlessly with your decor. The most visible hint is a wall mounted grill that looks very discrete and is barely noticeable.

Plasma TV Owners: How did you brace your wall to hang the unit?

I recently got a 50" Panasonic Plasma TV (TH-50PX60U) with a Sanus Flat Panel TV Mount (VMSAs) that tilts, swivels, and pans. The instruction manual with the tv mount says the wall should be able to handle 5 times the weight of the plasma tv plus the weight of the actual mount. That is roughly 550 pounds. How in the world do I beef up my wall to safely handle that? We live in an old house with plaster walls and I would like to hang it above the fireplace. Can you give me any advice? Thank you!
Thanks for the comments so far. Just to clarify, we do not use the fireplace - the tv would look very nice in this location!

First things first, I seriously doubt that the mfg. of the TV will warrant the TV if you hang it over a fireplace. I know you see all those pretty pics of TVs over fireplaces but they cannot handle the heat, most have an automatic shut off when they reach a certain temp.

The const of the wall around your fireplace may not have wood studs, hopefully it does, you must locate those studs and the weight you are talking about you will need to hit three studs with a wall bracket and that bracket will need to be bolted to the studs with at least two 3" lag bolts on each stud.

The lath on the wall is probably wood lath over which the plaster was spread, I've seen situations where the homeowner opened the wall to expose the studs and then attached 3/4" plywood to the studs to this they could bolt the mounting bracket distributing the load over the studs. This plywood could then be finished out to match the wall.

Again- carefully consider the mfg. recommendations regarding fireplaces.

Home Theater Systems are wonderful pieces of home audio equipment that are prevalent in many homes today. However one of the major issues of today's home theater systems is the massive amount of wires needed to set one up correctly.

If you have ever set-up a normal 2-speaker stereo system you have not even done half of the work it takes to set up a true home theater experience in your home! Most systems today have 5 satellite speakers and one sub woofer. High end systems can have up to 7 satellite speakers and a sub woofer! The wires not only must reach each speaker individually, but also must be of a decent enough quality to not be interfered with by any other electronic devices your wires may pass by. Not to mention the unsightliness of a "rats nest" of wires behind your entertainment system and wires running along the floor and behind furniture.

Enter wireless home theater technology! While wireless home theater systems don't necessarily mean a completely wireless home theater set-up. Mostly the wireless aspects are found in the rear satellite speakers and the sub woofer, the speakers that are furthest away from the source of your sound. And, while there are some great systems on the market, the quality of such systems still have some improvement before they can truly replace a properly wired home theater system. Yet if what's standing in your way of having a great home theater experience is wiring, then this solution is ideal for you!

Another option is to run the wires through the walls. This is what most professional installers do however in order to do it right you must know the layout of the studs in your walls and/or ceilings. You must use proper wiring that you know for sure will not deteriorate over time. And of course, you must know how to patch your walls and ceilings correctly so your work will be neat and not so obvious. You could also hire a contractor for this type of work but it could get quite expensive.

To run the wires underneath your carpet and/or rug is another option. This option is a bit of a pain as well because if not done properly the work can be quite evident if the speaker wires are of any significant thickness.

Both options mentioned above, however, can be quite frustrating when it comes to troubleshooting any issues you have after setting up your home theater system.

In conclusion, the price and level of sophistication you want to put into such a project will probably determine the viability of each option. However, with wireless home theater systems, you are guaranteed less work and easier troubleshooting which equals less frustration and more time enjoying your home theater system with your family and friends. Not to mention all the compliments you will get for the cleanliness and high end nature of your system compared to what others may have at their home!

Where do I place ceiling speakers in my living room?

I have two ceiling speakers that I"m looking to use for just general music listening. I have a long room, about 35' long, which is a combined living room / dining room. There is no one spot that I plan to sit and listen; sometimes I'll be in the dining room area, sometimes in the living room. Where would be a good place to place the two speakers? A video tape degrades with time because it is made of magnetic media. What you see ten, twenty years later is nowhere as sharp as when the tapes were first created. So, what is the shelf life of a magnetic tape (which includes Betamax, VHS, 8mm and mini-DV)?

If you ask a professional or a photo studio that question, the answer you get can range anywhere between 5 to 10 years. This is because it depends a lot on how 1) you handle it, 2) how you store it and 3) how often you played and rewound it - as opposed to letting it sit for years and years. Here are some tips to extend the shelf life of your tapes:

How to Handle Your Video Tapes

• Never touch the tape itself. Hold it by the side of the cassette

• Rewind the cassette before storing it.

• Keep away from curious kids, avoid dropping or banging the tapes.

• Keep cassettes away from magnetic fields

• Don't leave a cassette in the car where it will be exposed to heat and cold

• If using a new cassette and it's still cold, let it warm up to room temperature first.

• Occasionally fast forward and rewind a tape that's being stored a long time.

Where to Store Your Video Tapes

The conditions in which magnetic tape is stored and used can extend its shelf life. Observe these video storage tips:

• Store in conditions that are stable, cool and dry.

• Stay away from hot, humid and dusty.

• Store cassettes in the cassette case.

• Store your tapes vertically and not flat (see picture) to distribute the gravity pull equally and stably.

Ceiling / wall speakers acoustic performance?

I heard that when mounting ceiling or wall speakers you'll get better sound acoustics and speaker performance if you insert insulation or some other type of baffeling material to help tune the speaker. Anyone ever tried this? Does it help?

Yes, In most cases it should help. Check the recommendations of the manufacturer. Some speakers are designed to work in open spaces. Most in walls are designed to work IN walls.
If it is new construction I usually build a box 1ft X the width of stud or joist out of MDF (medium density fiberboard) Then I caulk the box and put insulation inside it. This will dampen resonance and inhibit the sound from traveling up into the attic or walls, and coming out into nearby rooms.

You will also want to put a protective cloth around the speaker if it is going to be exposed to any loose insulation. Better yet is to use a rear baffle. This is a must if you have blown in insulation in your ceiling. Many inwall/ceiling speaker manufacturers make these. You can find them online at Partexpress.com. or check with the manufacturer of the speakers you are buying to see if they make them.

One of the most important parts of any bathroom is the mirror. When properly lighted, a bathroom mirror can be every womanÂ’s best friend. Have you ever wondered why some bathrooms can be so friendly and welcoming while others are harsh and uninviting?

The answer probably lies on proper lighting. LetÂ’s admit it; everyone spends a considerable amount of time in front of a mirror. We primp and preen in front of a mirror trying to fix ourselves in as many ways as we can. A mirror is an important tool in providing ourselves proper grooming. The mirror needs to be properly lighted so that spending time in front of it will be an everyday pleasing routine.

It is a challenge to provide good lighting for a mirror. Lighting a mirror properly will eliminate unnecessary shadows and provide good illumination for every user. Frequently, we see only a single ceiling fixture in a bathroom. Instead of providing a friendly illumination, this type of lighting only casts shadows below your eyes and hit your eyebrows, which are definitely unfriendly effects. Cross lighting is the key to good mirror lighting. Cross lighting includes direct light from above, both sides and below. Achieving this can be made possible through a wide range of available lighting fixtures. Glare from frosted bulbs or those fixtures with opaque plastic or glass shields should be avoided.

Decorators suggest that the sinkÂ’s front edge and countertop should be illuminated with a light on the ceiling above the mirror. This could be a recessed task light that can be a round incandescent ceiling fixture that should be at least 12 inches in diameter with a bulb rating of 100 to 120 watts. You can also choose a fluorescent ceiling fixture above the sink. It is recommended that a fluorescent ceiling fixture above the sink should hold two 24-inch bulbs with 20 watt rating.

In order to complete the cross lighting, you should place light fixtures on both sides of the mirror. It is important to choose a light fixture that casts light in four directions - up, down and both sides. Rows of exposed incandescent bulbs with low wattage are especially designed to light mirrors. Pendants or wall-mounted fixtures are also common choices. These types of fixtures should be placed at eye level and should have at least 60 to 70 watt bulb. Fluorescent tubes are also favored choices because these utilize low electric consumption and last longer. Today, there are a lot of fluorescent tubes that are designed for vanity use and which provide a full spectrum light. A 24 inch 20 watt tube placed on each side of the mirror will create the required illumination. If your bathroom mirror is more than 24 inches wide, you can use a wall mounted light above the mirror and at the same time use the same type of fixture on the sides to complete the cross lighting effect.

Finally, for mirrors larger than 36 inches wide, sidelights may not be enough to provide the desired illumination. However this can be corrected by using powerful overhead light sources, which will be enough to cover even the mid section of the mirror that the side fixtures may fail to illuminate.

Mounting ceiling speakers in a wall?

I have a 7.1 surround sound receiver. I bought a 5.1 speaker set and am buying 2 additional speakers for the middle satellite speakers. I need in-wall speakers for logistic reasons. Most of the in-wall speakers are too big for the location I need but the round shape of the in-ceiling speakers would work.

I did the same thing using a 9.1 system. Basically make sure of the depth of the wall. Some inner walls are not deep enough to accommodate the speaker. I used Polk, a little more expensive but the end result was satisfying considering that you don't want to be cutting into your drywall and running cable more than once.

Is it a good of using Polk ceiling speakers instead of bose speakers ?

I just bought a bose home theater system "lifestyle 35" but I don't like the way the bose REAR speakers stick out so I decided to use Polk's ceiling speakers so that it looks unnoticeable and nice. The sub, front and center speakers are still bose's. Any suggestions of if I should keep all the bose stuff or go with polk.
I can't return bose but I want to know if the rear polk speakers are going to produce good surround sound and r they going to be compatible with the bose lifestyle.

Any sound that's gonna go to rear surround speakers usually isn't high fidelity anyway. Plus that lifestyle system filters only a certain range of frequencies to its speakers, so the Polks will probably sound very similar to what the bose cubes would sound like. You'd just have to finagle some way to wire them up, which would be pretty simple, and you'll be good to go. good luck!

Music lovers have gone to great lengths to make their musical experience memorable. That means great innovations when it comes to speakers. would this be a good system for a 2004 mustang?

I am getting a system soon and I am about to pay for it, what I need to know if this system will sound good and put out a **** load of bass.

C300.S Momo amplifiers 2, 150W

nice quality, great amp set up, 10"kickers (perfect size for a trunk install)...looks good! and yes it'll thump really strong (batcap seems to me kindof overkill, but hey its your ride.

consider the woofers in a sealed box - your speaker specs gives you the size of the box you'll need (vented or sealed) bury that installation in your trunk cavity (run no spare-carry can of sealant/compressed air)........
