Before starting to compare surveillance systems or evaluating potential vendors, consider what you want to monitor with your CCTV surveillance system. Once you decide what you want to see, choosing system components will become easier. Be sure you have the answers to the following questions before you spend any money for a video surveillance system...

Do you want to observe the general comings and goings? Vehicles? Or do you want to see specific faces, merchandise, or a crowd en mass? Do you need the surveillance to be covert, or do you want to avert any nefarious activities by making the cameras obvious?

Next, decide what picture quality you'll need for your surveillance systems. Quality can refer to both how detailed the image is and how fast the frame rate is. Frame rate measures the number of individual pictures that make up the video. "Real-Time", (what you see on television and on VHS tapes), is 30 frames per second. Most often, surveillance systems record at slower rates, which result in more jerky-looking images but saves on recording space. A system with higher Recording/Playback rate is preferred.

How will your surveillance system be monitored? Will you be recording at all times, and only review the tape when a problem occurs? Or will you have a dedicated employee watching for trouble? Also, with multiple surveillance system cameras, you have the option of connecting each to its own monitor, or combining multiple images onto one monitor.

What's the priority for the surveillance system? Is it the deterrence of potential crimes or the capture of perpetrators? If you are more interested in deterring certain activities, large, visible cameras are your best bet. Trying to catch criminals without them being cognizant of the surveillance, requires hidden surveillance system cameras, which cost more for hardware and for installation.

One of the newest trends in the surveillance system industry concerns digital recording. Only a few years ago, most closed-circuit TV systems were paired with the familiar Time Lapse VCR to record images. However, digital video recorders (DVRs), which record onto hard drives instead of tape, offer a positive alternative.

For businesses that do not want to change tapes constantly, DVRs definitely are the way to go. While security VCRs offer a time-lapse mode that lets them record for long periods of time, they record only one snapshot every eight seconds. To get higher quality, the tapes need to be changed every day, if not more often. DVRs, on the other hand, can record for weeks or even months without the video data needing to be archived or written over. However, if you're on a tight budget and willing to invest in fading technology, good time-lapse VCRs, designed specifically for security use, start at $300 to $400.

When choosing a CCTV camera, consider the space of your surveillance zone: Are you 5 feet or 15 feet away from your surveillance target area?

To determine the field of view required, take photos of the areas to be covered from the proposed camera locations. The type of lens you need depends upon what you want to see, how far away it is and how wide the viewing area. Do you want to capture a person's face or a car license plate? Each camera location will determine which lenses would maximize your surveillance potential. For example: A 4mm wide angle lens will be able to view an area 20' high X 26' wide at 21' away.

Will the cameras be subject to damage? If they will, damage resistant cameras would be a must.

Is the space well lit or dimly lit? Are the lights turned off at night? Do you want to monitor the area with the lights turned off? If so, infrared CCTV cameras will be required.

There are a broad range of video surveillance cameras available to you. Understanding the different kinds will make it easier to determine which will suit the application best.

Outdoor Cameras - Outdoor cameras need to be able to withstand extreme temperatures and humidity and usually come in a weatherproof casing that also helps protect against vandalism.

Infra-Red Cameras - These cameras have infrared LEDs installed around the lens of the camera. This provides the light the camera can use to 'see in the dark' even when no outside light is available. In some low light installations, a day/night camera will work as well.

Day/Night Security Cameras - Day/Night cameras have a super sensitive imaging chip in them. This allows these cameras to work great in low light with no infrared lighting needed. Low light means that there is some light available but not a lot, for example from street lights or even moon light. If your application has absolutely no light then you'll need to use infrared instead.

Bullet Cameras - Bullet cameras are small, compact and can be placed almost anywhere. These cameras are great for covert surveillance. The lens is built into the camera and cannot be switched. The main advantages to the bullet camera are their low cost and their small size.

Mini Security Cameras - Mini cameras are some of the smallest available, but still offer extremely good resolution and are ideal for unobtrusive surveillance. The compact design of these coin cameras make them very easy to hide and difficult to see.

Dome Cameras - Dome cameras are a popular style. Dome cameras present a streamline and professional look to any company, organization or building. They are available in both black & white and color formats. Some dome cameras come in an armor dome to protect against vandalism. Typically, they're only used indoors.

Just like any technology, the more you spend, the better the system you get. But, a low system is better than no video surveillance system at all.

Few things are more exciting and rewarding than building something that really works. Most kids love the challenge of building their own electronic devices, whether it's a simple robot or a bedroom alarm to keep out little siblings.

Various electronic kits are available, and the potential benefits go beyond the finished product. For a start, it's a hands-on opportunity to become familiar with some terminology. By high school, science classes often include an introduction to electronics concepts, including circuit diagrams, resistors, and diodes. What is the first step in installing a home theater? I plan on including:

Based on just your list, assuming you've already wired, the order doesn't make a lot of different. Here's a couple things to consider first, that aren't on your list:

Since you have a dedicated room to work with, you have some considerations before fixing your final design. The difference between a good theater and an amazing theater is 50% room and 50% equipment.

Decisions to make:

1. Sound proofing. If the room is big enough you can build a room within your room by staggering new studwalls, floor and ceiling and placing special material between the walls. Floors are suspended much like motor mounts in a car.

2. Splaying the side walls. If you build an inner-room you should make the side walls unparallel. A 20 foot deep room should be two feet wider at the back as a minimum.

3. Breaking up the ceiling. Whether you build an inner room or not, you should change the shape of the ceiling from flat to? I like to build a lattice framework that looks like the swells of a wave from below, and then have it drywalled, but there are endless possibilities here. My curved ceiling hangs from the actual ceiling and doesn't extend to the walls in any direction. This allows for stunning lighting designs.

4. Raised seating. If you are planning rows, you will want to pick your seat now so the proper wires can be installed for hardwire control from Crestron, AMX, etc... Best choice is to have your eyes even with the center of the screen vertically and horizontally. If you're married, you might want to split the difference and share the best seating position.

5. Before any construction begins, equipment should be chosen so the correct wiring cna be installed in the walls. I would not use 16/2 or 16/4 in a dedicated theater. That's surround family room wire. I would recommend 12 or 14 gauge non oxydizing high strand count speaker wire.

6. The most important components in any system are the speakers, the display and the remote control. Those are the items that we interface with and hence will show the best return for dollar spent. The rack full of boxes is far more forgiving than mediocre interface devices!

7. Projectors and screens are available now that will adjust to the full width of a 2.35:1 motion picture and the films can be displayed at 24 fps, just like at the theater. This is a substantial improvement over standard 16:9 fixed with 30 fps limitation. Several companies are making projectors like this now. I like Runco, Vidicron and JVC with anamorphic lenses.

8. Speakers can be hidden behind a faux front wall, even if you don't build an inner room. Side and rear speakers can be hidden in architectural detail walls. Picking speakers is far more complex than I can write about here.

9. Controlling a theater can be a nightmare or a breeze. It all depends on the control system and the programmer. Today, I would choose between Crestron, AMX or LifeWare. There are less costly, lower performance options such as RTI, Pronto, Nevo which work pretty well.

10. Separate processors and amplifiers are great but I've had good luck with high end receivers from Yamaha, Marantz and PioneerElite also, and they cost less money. Depending on the rest of your theater, you might even be able to use Marantz's lower end line, Denon.

11. Cables don't have to be the very best, but don't buy the bargain basement stuff either. I use Ethereal for lower cost installations and Tributaries in nicer rooms.

12. Regardless of the theater you design, hire a professional for room accoustics, sound calibration and display calibration to SMPTE standards. An ISF certified tech is adequate for display, HAA certifed tech is okay and afforable for accoustics and a THX level 2 tech will be qualified to calibrate the audio. NOTE: Room accoustics costs the most, and is the most valuable!

Why do speaker cables hook up the way they do?

I never got this. In order to secure something properly a jack should be used. Why do speaker wires and receivers not have regular jacks to hook up to each other? Why do they make it that you can only fasten the knobs in the back of the receiver to hold the wires? It seems like such backwards thinking!

Unlike the other connections on the back of the receiver, speakers need a significant amount of current and a very low-resistance connection. Mashing down wire under a screw clamp is actually a very good way to do that.

The spring clips on a lot of cheaper receivers and speakers, not so much.

RCA plugs do have good current capacity but they aren't really compatible with the heavier speaker wire. You also wouldn't want to risk someone plugging the output from their DVD player into a speaker output by accident.

Some equipment does use "five way" binding posts that can take banana plugs, but then you have to put banana plugs on the ends of your speaker wires. Most do not come that way and most add-on plugs use very small screw clamps that don't provide as low-resistance or reliable a connection as the simple wire-under-screw-clamp scheme.

A lot of audiophiles with high end gear prefer to use speaker wires terminated in spade lugs. These are crimped onto the ends of the wires and then used with the screw terminals, or even with the five-way binding posts. These really provide the lowest resistance. If you get a good crimp it's very reliable, too, as there is no possibility of stray wire strands shorting to each other or to the receiver rear panel.

Professional gear has used a lot of different connectors for speaker wires over the years. Lately they have been moving to "Speakon" connectors, a modified version of XLRs. This is an excellent connector for the job, but it is too large to put six or eight of them on the back of a home theater receiver. They could be used at the speaker end, though.

Will an ATSC tuner get normal TV?

I'm looking into purchasing a new TV. I'll use it mostly as a computer monitor and for my Xbox 360. But I also want to use it as a television.

No. This is because you are confusing two different terms.

HDD recorder = hard disc drive. This is a DVD recorder with a built in hard disc (like a computer drive), to record programmes onto.

HD = high definition. This refers to the latest high quality pictures, available from some television programme suppliers and on Blu-Ray discs.

A DVD recorder with an HDD will not record HD pictures.
A TV will not upscale pictures from a DVD recorder to HD.
A DVD recorder cannot upscale broadcast TV programmes to HD.

I need to burn my VHS tapes to a DVD, I have a DVD recorder but some of them are protected. Can u help?

I would like to copy some of my VHS tapes to a dvd, I have a dvd recorder with a VHS dubber. Some of the movies are protected and I can't dub them to a dvd. Is there a way around this.

Put tape over the BACK LEFT corner....where there is an indentation. Your VCR will think it's a tape YOU can record to and from.

Boombox type player that allows one to burn a cd from the cassette playing?

Would like to buy a boombox that allows one to play a cassette. While the cassette is playing it is being recorded on the CD player that is built in.

No, there are stand-alone CD recorders, but by far the best way to do this conversion is using a PC - that way you get to edit the tracks, 'clean' up the tape hiss and add track markers in the right places.

If you are a music enthusiastic of high fidelity sound reproduction, if you enjoy listening in a good stereo system each nuance of a musical interpretation, either jazz, rock or classical music, surely you have a large collection of CD and some important part of it on vinyl. Probably these are historical recordings or highly valued and they have not been reprinted in CD format.

Without going into the discussion in which some purists argue that the sound of vinyl LP, the analog sound, sounds better than the digital recordings, the truth is that the clean sound, the great dynamic range and the comfortable format of the CDs has relegated the vinyl LPs of to the past and the disuse. Then we need to convert these vinyl recordings to CD format, that is more practical and easy to handle.

But what we seek is something more than just the transfer of an LP to digital format. We need that defects and deficiencies of vinyl and its deterioration by the use disappear or at least be minimized and, eventually, to recover a part of the lost dynamic range of the original recording. For that purpose, there are companies that do this work, but the cost may be too high if they are too many disks to convert, or the quality of the final product delivered by the company is not satisfactory or, simply, we do not want risk that they harassed or damaged an LP that we have saved with affection.

Then, the more attractive alternative is to do this job as your own. If we do the work in a meticulously way, we will achieve professional results really surprising. For this we need, of course, quality software and also patience. In each of the following stages is indispensable to hear the full disk and every detail, with much attention, until to be satisfied with the result before moving to the next stage (it is advisable to use quality headphones).

Stage 1: Transfer to digital format.

The objective at this stage is to achieve a record reproduction as clean as possible of each LP at the time of recording it in the computer. This will save a great amount of cleaning work in digital format and we will also obtain a higher quality final result.

If the vinyl record is very dirty it will be necessary to submerge it in water with a drop of dishwasher and keep it in this solution by one hour or two. This will release the dirt accumulated. From time to time, sweep the disk in the direction of the path, with a soft brush and rinse the disk in the cleaning solution. If you want to keep the label it should be protected from water with polyethylene or some other impermeable material fastened with adhesive tape. The wash process with water and detergent does not damage the vinyl.

If the disk is in fine condition, a formula that gives good result is as follows: 65% of distilled water, 30% of ethyl alcohol, 5% of isopropyl and a few drops of liquid detergent. Alcohol must be pure, industrial, without any additive. To clean the disk you can rotate it in the turntable and clean it with a soft brush dampened in the resolution. Finally dry with absorbent paper.

In both cases, leave the disk to dry by at least one hour, or better, throughout the day. It is not recommended to play it wet. Apparently this technique, seemingly useful to reduce friction of the stylus to mitigate the background noise, produces more harm than benefits in the vinyl because it spreads the dirt in the groove and, subsequently, it needs to be played always wet to sound acceptable.

The necessary adjustments for recording sound from the stereo system to the PC are simple. The cable from the stereo (plugged into the Tape record jack) must be connected to the Line-In input in the sound card (light blue color). It is necessary to set up the Windows Mixer for the audio input (double-click the icon of the speaker in the bottom right of the screen).Once the audio mixer is open, click on the menu options-Properties, select the Recording radio button and mark the checkbox Line In of the selected volume controls. Make sure that the checkbox Line-In is selected. Reopen the Windows Mixer and be sure that the Line-In is not muted because there will be no sound entering the PC. Adjust the volume level to about 70%.

With these adjustments we can now record sound from the stereo system. For doing this any basic software for sound recording will be fine. The file generated must be in WAV format, 16-bit, 44100 Hz, CD-quality. It is convenient that the recording remains in a single file and at the end of the side one press pause and then continue recording. This will enable us to subsequently implement the digital filters to the entire LP and not track by track.

It is recommended not to save the compressed file in MP3 since its quality would be lowered because part of the sound will be lost in the compression. If you wish to save space compress the file in a not destructive format as FLAC or APE.

This first part of the process is simple and does not require experience to achieve good results. To eliminate the clicks, pops and the background noise of the LP you will need a little more skill that will be acquired with the practice. Therefore keep these recordings as a backup because, it is very likely that, after and with more knowledge you probably wish to reprocess these files to achieve better results.
