Can you connect 2 sets of component cables together w/ a female-to-female RCA adaptor?

I'm trying to connect my DVD player to my LCD TV, and the component cable I originally bought turned out to be too short (running cables through the wall). Rather than buy a new, longer one, I thought I could just use RCA female-to-female adaptors and connect a second component cable to complete the connection, but it doesn't seem to be working. Is the problem in using the RCA connectors, or something else?

It should work and there is no reason why it wouldn't if all the connectors are connected properly. I'd check the connections to make sure they're snug and that all of the colors match up.

You have a different problem

Your DVD player does not downmix properly the 5.1 channels, so since you don't have a Center channel you miss all the dialog!!

Go back to your settings and specify you have a 2-ch stereo system, not 5.1 or on the DVD menu specify 2-ch stereo NOT Dolby or DTS.

i want to purchase a sony home theater but am confused about which system to buy...so far i've seen the bravia?

the BRavia dav hdx277wc, the dav-hdx285, the dav-hdx274...i'm so confused...what's the difference between all of these..i thought the higher the number since as 285...that it would have more features right?...but it seems the 277 is more expensive....please help!

For that money you could get a system like mine - the HTDDWG800. It has the same codecs and such but it has more connectivity options. Plus, instead of it using a dvd player as the amp, it uses a proper reciever. DVD systems usually pale in comparison to proper systems, I discovered when shopping around, plus it becomes more useful in the long run because you can plug more stuff into it. Correct me if I am wrong, but the hdx277wc does not have a HDMI input, so you cant plug an xbox or a ps3 into it, so you cant exactly get the best sound out of blu rays if you ever get one as you are stuck with using the dvd player that comes with it.

I think it is much better to get a system with a proper amp, and if you shop around you can build your own system for cheaper.

Bear in mind that this was a glance at the system specs, so dont take it as facts.

What is the difference in video quality from HDMI DVD player versus Progressive Scan Player?

I have an HDTV and looking for a new DVD player. How does the picture quality on a progressive scan DVD player compare with one of the new HDMI DVD players? Will the HDMI produce near-HD quality? Is it worth the extra $100-200 for the player and the special cable?

Progressive scan refers to the way the image is displayed. The image is non-interlaced providing a sharper image quality and is not directly related to HDMI, HDMI is the video connection.

HDMI is a high definition output provided by some DVD players, especially high end ones. HDMI is an all digital output again that preserves image quality. The competitor to HDMI is DVI which is similar in that, it too outputs an all digital signal.

There are two types of HDMI, type A is backwards compatible with DVI, type B HDMI is designed to support image resolutions higher than 1080p which is where most high definition TVs max out.

Basically what I'm saying is that progressive scan is how the image is displayed and HDMI is the output signal, the two combined together provide the best image quality.

Whether you use DVI or HDMI is of almost no consequence but you will want to pick one or the other (or whichever one is supported on your TV).

Let me try this again, any DVD player equipped with HDMI outputs will support progressive scan and the same goes for a player that has a DVI video connection.

Yes, it is worth the extra cables and player price.

Vizio GV42L 42" HDTV LCD settings?

I just bought a Vizio GV42L 42" LCD HDTV. Just a few questions:
1) what settings have you used for cable programming and/or movies, as I hear to get good picture you really need to tweak it right.
2) I have my comcast HD DTS box and progressive scan DVD player connected to the Vizio using component cables. When I'm watching an HD channel, it does look HD, and when I'm watching a DVD It does look much higher quality than typical analog cables..However, when I press the info button. It still says resolution coming it at only 480i. Should I be concerned and/or try using HDMI cables instead?

I ran into this problem with my Samsung LCD.. the Cox Cable HD box wasn't automatically converting the signal to 1080i. You'll have to go into the settings of your cable box and manually switch it to 1080i... I ran through a setup process that it displays a bunch of screens and which ever one you can see it programs the box to use ...after that it automatically switched between the 1080i for the HD channels and lower 720/480 for the non HD channels.

Call your cable provider.. thats what i did to figure out the setup program.

Help with my lcd tv...Please read!?

Okay, I have a 32 inch LG lcd. When I watch a widescreen movie, or television program, I have problems getting it to fill the whole screen. If I use the 16:9 setting it stretches the picture and doesn't make the bars go away. (I'm well aware that some things are filmed in aspect ratios that are in a wider format, and black bars will still be present no matter what--this is NOT the case.) If I set it to ZOOM, it fills the whole screen, however it cuts off a bit on the top and bottom (this is still the widescreen picture, not a full screen show which would definitely cut the picture). What I want to know is how to get the picture to fill up my screen without cutting it off or stretching it. I can't stand seeing people stretched...I like proportions to be correct. Also, when I zoom, it makes the picture fuzzier than it should be, and that's annoying.
Any help would be wonderful. I'd love to be able to use my tv to the fullest extent.

What is the source for you TV? Are you using a cable or satellite box, or DVD player? The setting for 16:9 should be made in these components, not in the TV. Are you sure you are using HDTV connections (component or HDMI)? Anything else will not be HDTV and not fill the screen.

If it is happening on broadcast HDTV received by the set's internal tuner, something is wrong with the set. However, a non-HD program broadcast in letterbox mode will have bars left and right and top and bottom. You can use zoom on that to fill the screen, but it will look fuzzy.

The compact disc has been around since 1978, developed by Phillips and Sony. The reason it was developed was to take over for the Laserdisc as the industry standard digital audio disc. Since its invention, we have seen many updates on the compact disc technology. The most recent being the CD-R and DVD discs. With the CD-R, you can now burn your own discs at home, and then modify those discs at a later date. DVD technology allows us to record video onto a disc, where we used to only be able to record audio and data. As time rolls by, and the disc industry advances, we are presented with new forms of these technologies. The two new contenders are Blu-Ray discs and HD-DVD, hereÂ’s a little information about each of these new disc types.

1. Blu-Ray

This type of disc, also known as Blu-Ray Disc, is the next generation of optical disc. It was developed by the Blu-Ray Disc Association, a group of consumer electronic/PC/media manufacturers, including: Apple, HP, Mitsubishi, Phillips, Sony, and others. The Blu-Ray disc type was mainly developed for recording, rewriting, and playing back high-definition (HD) video. ItÂ’s also perfect for storing large amounts of data, exceeding previous DVD-R disc storage capabilities. It can hold more than 5 times the amount of information that a traditional DVD can hold, up to 25GB single layer, and up to 50GB dual layer. One of the main differences of the Blu-Ray disc is the type of laser that the disc is read with. Normal DVDs are read with a red laser, the Blu-Ray discs are read with a blue-violet laser. The main benefit of this change is the wave length of the laser types. The traditional red laser has a wider focus, so the blue-violet laser can be focused more precisely allowing more tightly packed data. This equals more data in less space on the disc, this results in the additional storage space available on the new Blu-Ray discs. These new discs are backwards compatible with regular DVDs, which they are expected to replace in the near future.

2. HD-DVD

HD-DVD discs, High Definition Versatile Discs or High Definition Digital Video Discs, are very similar to the Blu-Ray discs. This disc type is being developed by a group of consumer electronics/PC companies, headed by Toshiba. They also use a blue-violet laser to read the contents of the disc, which results in an increase in storage capacity compared to normal DVD discs. The HD-DVD can store 15GB single layer and 30GB double layer, making their storage capacity 10GB per layer smaller than the Blu-Ray. But Toshiba has announced a triple layer disc that can hold 45GB of information, and the HD DVD discs can hold both HD DVD and regular DVD information on one disc.

Right now these two disc types are battling it out to become the next generation of DVD disc technology, conjuring up images of the battle between Betamax and VHS in the 80Â’s. I guess weÂ’re all wondering whoÂ’s going to come out on top? In my honest opinion, I believe that Blu-Ray will become the new standard. Both disc types offer HD capability and large data storage capacity, so itÂ’s kind of hard to say which is better. The Blu-Ray, with its greater maximum storage capacity and the fact that itÂ’s being backed by more of the large consumer electronic/PC/media manufacturers, I believe will win the battle. But itÂ’s all still up in the air, so only time will tell.

High def wars and the Toshiba HD-A2 HD DVD player?

I have been following the HD war on the side lines not wanting to get burned. But I really need a new DVD player for my 42 inch HDTV.(mine is about 7 years old) So I start checking out upscaling DVD players. Then I just found out about the Toshiba HD-A2 HD DVD player. But I don't want to lose. So here is my question.

Sounds like a reasonable plan. The HD-A2 is supposed to be a great upconverting player and if you compare to the Oppo 981 (one of the best "standard" upconverting players) at $229 it is a great deal, particulalry if you consider the 5 free HD DVDs available with the $299 HD-A2. There are cheaper upscaling players, but they don't all do a good job. In fact my brother bought a Sony and it died in a few months.

I'm in much the same boat as you. I'd really like to get the HD-X2 because of the superior scaler but it is nowhere near as good a deal. The HD-A2 is the only blue laser player (HD DVD or Blu-Ray) I consider to be a viable option at this point, and if you need a new DVD player it is almost a no-brainer. Even if Blu-Ray "win" the format war you still have a good upscaling player and the means to play the cheap HD DVDs that will be sold off.

Some comments on other responses. The HD-A2 will give 1080i output over either component or HDMI, so an HDMI connection on your TV is not essential (should you not have one) BUT to get upconversion of standard DVDs (to 480p, 720p or 1080i) you need HDMI. Output is 1080i max on the HD-A2 (you need to buy the HD-A20 for 1080p output), but on most HDTVs 1080p would not give a noticable better picture. Neither Blu-Ray nor HD DVD may ever be the eventual winner (could be download or holographic disks, who knows), and may never catch on given their questionable appeal to the average consumer, but you can benefit now for relatively little money. I have adopted SACD and DVD-A for music and don't regret it even if most consumers have ignored it ... you have to do what works for you.

If you do go ahead and buy, consider Amazon.com's deal --- if you buy both the HD-A2 ($299) and the Matrix trilogy ($63) you get the mail in 5 free HD DVDs offered by Toshiba, plus 2 free HD DVDs from Amazon (total of 7 HD DVDs, up to a $200 value).

There are a number of ways to hide a flat panel television when it is not being used by incorporating the feature into the overall home theater room design. Some use a static image to display a piece of art or favorite family picture. Others use elaborate mounting unites and screens to cover the television when it is not in use. A professionally design theater system can incorporate any idea you have to make the room beautiful both when in use as well as when not.

Below are some display options available for home owners as they consider how they want their flat panel television to be concealed when not in use.

Screensaver Displays

Since many LCD TVs are simple displays like those used by computer users, they can be set to display art and photos when they are not in use. Using a screensaver however does require the television to be on so it is not recommended for long stretches of time. It is best for use during parties.

Customized Art Covers

Custom art overlay options are becoming more common. A specialized piece of art on a canvas can be made to be placed over the screen when homeowners are not using the TV. This is an inexpensive solution that does not require any new wiring or customized mounting.

Many homeowners choose to hang their flat panel televisions above a fireplace. For a traditional flare, a wooden frame can be installed around it, thus turning your television into a mantel piece. Professional installers can also design an automated system that slides a screen cover over the flat panel.

Moving Displays

Pop-up and flip-down displays are the ultimate convenience for home theater owners. At the touch of a button, the screen can be brought up from an inconspicuous piece of furniture or down from the ceiling. This technique is especially useful with flat panel televisions that need to be installed at the foot of the bed; the television can be placed on a motorized lifting mechanism that can move the television up while watching TV before bed and down before you turn off the lights.

Other Considerations

Most home theaters are not comprised of the TV alone. Mounted televisions prove more difficult to integrate into an entertainment system because all the necessary connections need to be run through walls. Wireless technology for these applications is improving but is not yet fool-proof.

Custom home theater installers can offer advice on how to arrange DVD players and receivers to match the subtle look of a hidden flat panel television.

Choosing the right option to hide a LCD TV into a room's design can be difficult. The size and shape of walls or the way they are built can limit the installation options. Place the television in the appropriate spot for viewing, and then start considering installation options.

Does anyone know how to turn the speakers off on a samsung lcd hdtv? I have a sony surround system hooked up to it and the only way I can get the full effect out of my system is to turn the speakers off on the tv. Does anyone know how to do this?

the menu is actually set up to ask you if you are going to use surround sound, come to think of it, if you have a HDtv just mute the dang thing and use audio out from your HD receiver or the DVD player when not watching local on air TV , cuz that is only broadcast in stereo.
