When you think about furniture for your home theatre, the first thing that jumps to mind is chairs and seating.  This isn't a bad thing.  The chairs and seating are extremely important in a home theatre set up, but don't let your mind stop there.  If you do, you'll be robbing yourself, and those you entertain, of a lot of potential fun from setting up the room in any style or theme that you want!  

Part of the fun of having a home theatre, is having a separate room for it.  You don't have to stop with a leather sofa, or a few recliners.  Find posters of your favorite movies, or often times video stores will have cardboard cut outs that they eventually just throw away.  You can make your home theatre look like a normal place to watch a movie, or it can look like half the movies made in the 1970s came to life around your surround sound speakers.  The room can be a place to watch the game, or it can have green carpet, and football field wall paper.  The possibilities really are virtually endless, limited only by your imagination and a reasonable budget.

Aside from the ambiance and furniture, don't forget that you need furniture to hold your home theatre.  Obviously the entertainment center has to be the center attention of the room.  What kind of TV do you have?  Is it an HD/TV, a Plasma?  Do you have your own fine wooden cabinet for the entertainment center already picked out?  What does the wood look like?  If you have a TV that hangs on the wall, well how do you accessorize that?  Where do you put the speakers?  Where do you put the DVD player?  All of these questions are considerations you need to keep in mind, and the selection of furniture is critical to all these elements.  

There are a lot of different options as far as what kind of furniture you need and/or want.  Accessories for this area could include audio visual cabinets, video cabinets, TV cabinets, stereo cabinets, multimedia storage cabinets, or entertainment cabinets.  There are cabinets of every shape, color, make, and design that can accommodate almost any need or desire you have for the room.

Beyond the necessities, there are even the fun little things people don't expect.  Popcorn machines are cheaper than they used to be, and for the bachelor with the great home theatre, why not build a bar right in the back of the room?  It's your home theatre, why not get the home theatre furniture and other miscellanea that gives it your personality?  

No one ever made a good impression by following everyone else, so find the home theatre furniture and accessories that will make that home theatre distinctly yours.  After all, you're the one spending the money, you're the one putting in a home theatre, shouldn't it be something you can truly enjoy?

Brainstorm all the ideas you have, make a list, and do your homework.  Do these three things are you'll be sure to end up with the home theatre system, sound, and furniture you want to make it one of a kind.

Around 5 years ago, setting up a home theater system in the house was very costly. The technology was very new then and purchasing a flat screen TV, sound system, DVD system and home theatre furniture would have set you back around 15000 dollars. These days, you can easily set up that same system for a third of the price. This is so because of economics. Production capacities of such products are huge that these items can be sold at a third of the price it used to be. The leader of Flat Screen TV production units is Korea who has created their niche. 90% of all flat screen television sets whether they are LCDs, LEDs or Plasma Screens come from Korea. Sound systems have also integrated their set ups to allow present technologies to converge. Not only are these systems blue ray ready but also are capable of integrating with IPods and MP3s and MP4 units but are also integrated for internet browsing capabilities. There also is new technology wherein such sound systems perform their own sound checks and optimize their sound capability based on the size of the room and the location of the speakers thereby eliminating the need for doing experimental sound checks and constantly relocating the speakers manually. Home theatre furniture has also been slashing their prices to make it more affordable for people to purchase sets. Single or Double Chairs can now be bought for prices a bit over 200 dollars and there are some 4 seat sets that cost just over a thousand dollars. Most of this home theatre furniture has their own set of recliners, huge arm rests with great cup holders.

The feel of a home theatre is never complete without home theatre furniture. Big leather sets that recline along with their self contained TV trays, huge arm rests and cup holders almost makes one feel like they are on a first class section of an airplane, which for the most part can be true since the subcontractors for such seats are often the ones that do make the home theatre furniture. Again, it is the economies of scale as making more of such seats enables the manufacturer to bring down their prices.

But even if one cant afford home theatre furniture, there is still that old reliable coach that is cozy enough for one to sit or even lie down to enjoy a great television show or better yet, a DVD movie.

Home theater system may be best for you if you want entertainment and relaxation after a long day of work. If you are one of those busy executives who want to relax after a long day of work by watching movies but hate traffic jams, setting up a home theater may be what is best for you. Home theater is a luxury for some. This is because not many people can afford it however, knowing the basic components of a home theater may help you enjoy this modern entertainment. Know the basic components you need for your home theater system including home theater furniture to acquire the theatrical experience right in your own living room.

Basic home theater furniture such as home theater chairs and television cabinet may be good for your home theater set up. Other furniture that will enhance the home theater set up may be necessary but the home theater chairs and television cabinet are two of the basic home theater furniture that you may need. My JBL home theater system with an Onkyo 607. Playing really loud. You can't hear how good and loud it sounds, but you can see the system and imagine it =) You can see the light on top of the subwoofer flashes because of the high excursion. The JBL e 100 front speakers isn't playing an excursion. The reciver isn't strong enough for them to do that. But it was a huge difference from the old one and this =)

There are a number of ways to hide a flat panel television when it is not being used by incorporating the feature into the overall home theater room design. Some use a static image to display a piece of art or favorite family picture. Others use elaborate mounting unites and screens to cover the television when it is not in use. A professionally design theater system can incorporate any idea you have to make the room beautiful both when in use as well as when not.

Below are some display options available for home owners as they consider how they want their flat panel television to be concealed when not in use.

Screensaver Displays

Since many LCD TVs are simple displays like those used by computer users, they can be set to display art and photos when they are not in use. Using a screensaver however does require the television to be on so it is not recommended for long stretches of time. It is best for use during parties.

Customized Art Covers

Custom art overlay options are becoming more common. A specialized piece of art on a canvas can be made to be placed over the screen when homeowners are not using the TV. This is an inexpensive solution that does not require any new wiring or customized mounting.

Many homeowners choose to hang their flat panel televisions above a fireplace. For a traditional flare, a wooden frame can be installed around it, thus turning your television into a mantel piece. Professional installers can also design an automated system that slides a screen cover over the flat panel.

Moving Displays

Pop-up and flip-down displays are the ultimate convenience for home theater owners. At the touch of a button, the screen can be brought up from an inconspicuous piece of furniture or down from the ceiling. This technique is especially useful with flat panel televisions that need to be installed at the foot of the bed; the television can be placed on a motorized lifting mechanism that can move the television up while watching TV before bed and down before you turn off the lights.

Other Considerations

Most home theaters are not comprised of the TV alone. Mounted televisions prove more difficult to integrate into an entertainment system because all the necessary connections need to be run through walls. Wireless technology for these applications is improving but is not yet fool-proof.

Custom home theater installers can offer advice on how to arrange DVD players and receivers to match the subtle look of a hidden flat panel television.

Choosing the right option to hide a LCD TV into a room's design can be difficult. The size and shape of walls or the way they are built can limit the installation options. Place the television in the appropriate spot for viewing, and then start considering installation options.

There are three main categories of skylights to consider: fixed, ventilating and tubular. A fixed skylight does not move and its only purpose is to allow light in. You may have flat, dome, round, polygon and pyramid styles in this category. An operable or ventilating skylight can be controlled and may come with temperature control facilities. Only flat and dome styles are available. A tubular model of skylight is the best choice for narrow spaces, like a bathroom or a hallway. These may resemble light fixtures as they reflect light off a highly reflective surface.

The energy efficiency of your model of skylight depends on the direction in which it is placed. The orientation decides how much heat and light enters a room. For instance, skylights turned to the East give maximum morning sunlight while those that face the West let in the afternoon sun. However, it is possible to control heat and light penetration through the use of low-emission coatings and tints. These absorb UV rays and block the harsh rays of the sunlight. Thus they act as a first line of defense between the sun and your carpet or furniture.

The latest models of skylights are available with a number of useful accessories. For instance, motorized units make it easy to eliminate the problem of having to manually operate skylights. Similarly, moisture sensors and flashing kits ensure moisture control and proper drainage. These features also keep the inside of the room safe from moisture.

Toddler_o_Geek and I danced until bedtime Sunday night.

We started out with Gnarls Barkley (didn’t get us moving) and quickly switched to Futureheads. I pogoed, my daughter stomped. I made the mistake of pogoing toward her instead of just side to side, we then went into full chase mode—I was still dancing (a series of spastic kicks, arms flailing and hopping like a frog) and she screamed around the room as fast as she can navigate the furniture. We got through “Alms” before bathtime (I was freaking her out with my expert lip-synching at this point).

I can enjoy myself while dancing because I donÂ’t have to wonder if the music sounds good or not. I donÂ’t have to go upstairs to find a new CD in my armoire and then eject the playing CD and load the new one. My musical desires are answered by pressing left, up, right, down and X. I control my whole music collection through my Sony PSP and Coverbuddy on my Mac Mini. Convenience and fun overshadow audiophilia and tweaking. My initial experience with this music server wasnÂ’t as fun.

I mentioned in the last wiring post that my Taddeo Digital Antidote, while great for CD playback, maimed the Airtunes signal. At first, I thought the Airtunes stream was fundamentally flawed (we are dealing with MP3 and AAC playback in a hi-fi system). Then I had the good fortune to listen to one of Steve Albini’s best engineered albums, Bedhead’s Transaction De Novo. The first track, “Exhume,” begins with long, droning electric bass notes. As I have heard the song many times through headphones and original CD I knew the notes should decay smoothly. With the Taddeo in the signal path the bass decay oscillated. This obvious aberration in the song forced me to take the Taddeo out of the signal path, resulting in a direct link between my Onkyo AV Receiver and my Rogue preamp. Without the Taddeo the bass line cleared up along with the rest of the instruments and voices.

Now sure of the cleanest path from Airtunes to my listening roomÂ’s loudspeakers, I got down to serious listening.

I ripped Shellac’s At Action Park to Apple Lossless (I had to rename the album so the songs didn’t get mixed up with my previous AAC MP4 files of the same album). I listened to “My Black Ass” first through Airtunes with Apple Lossless, AAC and then through my CD player, a Pioneer DV47ai.

What I heard:

* Apple Lossless: Tight bass, good image depth, separation of instruments, cymbals splashy, no sibilance, could follow bass line, Steve AlbiniÂ’s annoying effect guitar (his words) not fatiguing

* AAC 128: Slightly more monotone, like voice bass guitar and drum kit flat in smae image space, cymbals more controlled and less live, bass drum muted, some sibilance

* CD: Best separation of instruments—voice and guitar well in front of drum kit with bass behind to the right; no noticeable sibilance, snare drum tight and real, cymbals appear in image space as 3D saucers when struck by drum sticks, bass drum kicks

The differences may have more to do with my CD playerÂ’s DAC (Burr Brown 192k Chip) versus the OnkyoÂ’s WRAT DAC than differences between the original CD versus Apple Lossless. (This album still sounds best on vinyl.)

I would hate it if the Airtunes signal beat out my CD signal, the latter a much bigger investment. It’s amazing it comes so close. The neck and neck race makes you wonder what determines the music that gets to your ears—DAC, jitter, cables, static, wobbly discs? The tweaker’s reported drawbacks of CD drag it back toward the music server sound quality.

Convenience is the biggest benefit of a music server system. Once set up properly (hopefully you have good idea by now) Airtunes run through high end electronics rocks.

If you want your music server to output the highest quality signal, rip all your better recorded CDs to Apple Lossless, buy a nice DAC (like Musical FidelityÂ’s X-DAC v3 or get by with whatever is in your digital processor) and relax in your sweet spot.

If you want to dance the night away with your wife and daughter, hop around to your AACs and MP3s, Sony PSP/Coverbuddy remote control in hand.

The former is a lonely experience. The family had more fun with the latter.

Portable gazebos are very much in demand during the rainy spring and fall, as well as during the hot days of summer. If you were going to have an outdoor event such as a wedding, graduation, or concert just to name a few examples, you would be advised to have a portable gazebo ready and waiting to provide shelter. Or, maybe you live on a small suburban property or in a city brownstone with a courtyard garden and really want some privacy. A portable gazebo, or shade canopy can be set up for the summer in your garden or lawn to create your outdoor living room.

Portable gazebos are made to provide shade from the hot sun and it's harmful UV rays as well as to provide shelter from the wind and rain. There are portable gazebos made for vendors to use at festivals and street fairs and conventions. There are gazebos with clear plastic sides made just for growing plants, which can be dismantled for the winter. These types of portable gazebos are designed to be little huts with four or more support poles and a framework roof covered with a canopy.

Canopy: The best portable gazebos are covered with a canopy made from either specially engineered mesh fabrics like canvas and polyethylene that are designed to provide shade, UV protection, and wind protection, or a canopy of waterproof silver coated polyester, or heavy duty marine vinyl for rain protection. Some good quality shade canopies are made with fabrics from companies like Coolaroo, Sunbrella, and Synthesis.

Frame: A large portable gazebo will require that you get a sturdy frame made from galvanized steel tubing or furniture grade PVC pipe. There should be an internal cross frame section to prevent the gazebo from collapsing inward. Smaller gazebos that you can pack up for a day at the beach should be made of good quality, lightweight aluminum. Pop up portable gazebos may seem convenient, but make sure that you know how to fold the thing back up into it's carrying case!  One person can put up these smallest size gazebos, but bigger ones need at least two people to set up and take down.

You can customize your gazebo with additional options like mosquito netting and wind and waterproof side panels complete with clear plastic 'windows'. Your portable gazebo doesn't have to just look functional; it can be decorated with fabrics, garlands, potted plants and outdoor string lights. Feel free to set up an outdoor dining table and chairs, lounge furniture, and even a music system in your waterproof gazebo. And, just to add to your fun, you can get water-misting systems to install in your portable gazebo for cooling off in torrid weather. Don't let the crazy weather control your outdoor activities! Inline speaker switch?

I have 4 outdoor speakers around my pool. I would like to add a 5th into a Gazebo. I am running the necessary wires for this new speaker and thought that I would like the ability to shut this one speaker off while the stereo is on.

Radio Shack employs sales men, not technicians. In fairness, I do have to say that they do know what they're talking about. Unfortunately, most of what they know just isn't true. I had one tell me that fuses could be open, but there was no test to determine if a fuse might be shorted. (Tell ya what, slick, if it's shorted, I can live with it, okay?)

Anyway, switches serve more purposes than routing line voltage to equipment. One of those purposes can very well be to interrupt the audio feed to a speaker. Unfortunately, a ready-made switch with connectors aren't in much demand so they're not really available, You'd have to build your own.

What I think he tried to talk you into was an A/V switch which consists of a video and L/R audio connectors. Kind of a waste of a lot of connections and, like you said, not weatherproof.

The other thing to keep in mind, though, is the changing impedance to your amplifier system by switching a speaker in and out of the system, unless you're using a 70v speaker system.

Some systems require that the unit be drilled into the floor of the room. These are generally systems that rely on spring mechanisms. Mounting a Murphy bed unit into the floor provides grounded stability and truly makes your Murphy bed a fixture in your home, but it is important to note the long-term effects of mounting on your floor. Most floor-mount systems call for a solid mounting surface, requiring any carpeting to be cut away which can permanently damage your floor. Home Theater Systems are wonderful pieces of home audio equipment that are prevalent in many homes today. However one of the major issues of today's home theater systems is the massive amount of wires needed to set one up correctly.

If you have ever set-up a normal 2-speaker stereo system you have not even done half of the work it takes to set up a true home theater experience in your home! Most systems today have 5 satellite speakers and one sub woofer. High end systems can have up to 7 satellite speakers and a sub woofer! The wires not only must reach each speaker individually, but also must be of a decent enough quality to not be interfered with by any other electronic devices your wires may pass by. Not to mention the unsightliness of a "rats nest" of wires behind your entertainment system and wires running along the floor and behind furniture.

Enter wireless home theater technology! While wireless home theater systems don't necessarily mean a completely wireless home theater set-up. Mostly the wireless aspects are found in the rear satellite speakers and the sub woofer, the speakers that are furthest away from the source of your sound. And, while there are some great systems on the market, the quality of such systems still have some improvement before they can truly replace a properly wired home theater system. Yet if what's standing in your way of having a great home theater experience is wiring, then this solution is ideal for you!

Another option is to run the wires through the walls. This is what most professional installers do however in order to do it right you must know the layout of the studs in your walls and/or ceilings. You must use proper wiring that you know for sure will not deteriorate over time. And of course, you must know how to patch your walls and ceilings correctly so your work will be neat and not so obvious. You could also hire a contractor for this type of work but it could get quite expensive.

To run the wires underneath your carpet and/or rug is another option. This option is a bit of a pain as well because if not done properly the work can be quite evident if the speaker wires are of any significant thickness.

Both options mentioned above, however, can be quite frustrating when it comes to troubleshooting any issues you have after setting up your home theater system.

In conclusion, the price and level of sophistication you want to put into such a project will probably determine the viability of each option. However, with wireless home theater systems, you are guaranteed less work and easier troubleshooting which equals less frustration and more time enjoying your home theater system with your family and friends. Not to mention all the compliments you will get for the cleanliness and high end nature of your system compared to what others may have at their home!

Where do I place ceiling speakers in my living room?

I have two ceiling speakers that I"m looking to use for just general music listening. I have a long room, about 35' long, which is a combined living room / dining room. There is no one spot that I plan to sit and listen; sometimes I'll be in the dining room area, sometimes in the living room. Where would be a good place to place the two speakers? Right in the middle of the room? On one end and on the other?
