Lag in Pro Tools, never lagged before?

I'm running ProTools m-powered 7.2 on a windows XP SP3 machine (2.2 ghz core 2 duo processor, FAST hard drive) with an m-audio fastTrack Pro interface. Everything works fine until I try to record or change an item in the setup menu, because ProTools will not respond for almost 30 seconds! I minimized my disk allocation time, set it to one processor, reduces the DAE buffer, and made sure I had no count in. I'm still getting this lag/freezing up. It used to work fine, and I didn't install anything new. What could be going on?

I have almost the exact same setup as you except I have SP2 instead of SP3 and to be honest, Ive only run into serious lag issues with Pro Tools a handful of times. Make sure that when you reduce the buffer size you recording, and when it you raise it your just playing back tracks. I think the main reason why my setup was lagging was because I had a lot of hidden programs and applications that were totally unrelated to Pro Tools running in the background with out me knowing it. Once I went into the Windows Task Manager and killed off all of my unwanted processes Pro Tools seemed to run a lot smoother.

Looking to buy a digital video recorder? When deciding which digital camcorder to buy, a few different factors are important considerations. Often the final choice will be determined by the following key areas: price range, what the camera is to be used for, and any extra features needed. --Video Format--

The types of video format can be divided into two broad categories - high definition and standard definition. Within the high definition category there is a further choice between 720p (lower HD resolution) and 1080 i/p (higher HD resolution). Standard definition is a good choice for those on a budget and people who want to record home movies and special occasions.

Casual occasion video can get by with 720p but professional video, and anyone who wants the best and greatest, should go with nothing less than 1080 i/p.

--Lens Type--

Lenses for digital video recorders vary by zoom level. A fixed lens with 10x optical zoom level or greater will suffice for any use. Professional videographers may want to look for a camera with interchangeable lenses but this is often only necessary for filmmakers.

--Sensor--

The minimum sensor rating for home video users is 680,000 pixels for standard definition and two megapixels for HD. CCD standard sensors at 4mm are sufficient. Professional standards rise to a 6-8 mm sensor and CMOS chips.

--Minimum Illumination--

The illumination rating helps users understand how well video is recorded by that device in low light. The lower the number, the less light is needed. Standard home video or budget cameras usually have a rating of seven; anything lower than seven is better than average.

Some of the best cameras go as low as two and five is sufficient for most professional work.

--Recording Media--

The type of media you record onto can make all the difference. Many video camera manufacturers no longer make video cameras that record to tape. MiniDV and mini DVD-R+R were once all the rage but these are also slowly falling out of favour. Some cameras have an internal hard drive. These work well for large storage but they can only be transferred with a wired connection to a computer.

If you will be using video for a multitude of uses, the best choice of media are removable memory cards. SDHC is the standard but some brands, such as Sony, use Memory Stick which works just as well. Stay away from formats other than SDHC or Memory Stick, if possible.

These are the standards and anything else may not be around for much longer.

--Connectors--

For connection to a computer USB 2.0 is the standard. Some digital video cameras use FireWire but those are becoming less common. For a direct TV connection S-video is used for all purposes on the high end and on the low end, though some cameras offer only standard A/V RCA connectors.

--Viewfinders--

All viewfinders should be in colour and can range in size from 60 - 100 mm. Depending on how you use the camera the size of the viewfinder can be of varying significance. Viewing screen is also important. Most users prefer a larger screen, upwards of two inches, that flips out.

--Other features--

Other notable extras and features to take into consideration are battery life, charging time, and electronic adjustment such as anti-shake. Battery life can be an important consideration if you are using the digital video camera to record an overseas trip or more rugged holiday adventure.

There has been lots of talk about the CAVS Karaoke Players so we thought we'd take the time to test one of the more popular models. The DVD-203G USB has all the usual features like 2 mic inputs with echo, programmable song ordering, numeric keypad to access any number song, parental control, digital Key control and Voice cancelling on multiplex discs but here we'll cover pros and cons on important points of interest.

CONS

Professionals will not use the supplied microphone. To my ear, as a professional I like to use high quality mics so the singers always sound their best. That being said, the average “consumer ear” may find that the supplied CAVS microphone sounds just fine.

There are no fancy video graphics like you see with the 12" laser discs. What you get is backup tracks of CD quality music with the song's lyrics on your monitor or TV

There are several ala carte extras to consider before buying a CAVS DVD-203G USB as follows:

1. The unit has two mic inputs but only comes with one microphone as was mentioned above. You might want a second for all those duets.
2. Most packages include 1 disc (up to 1250 songs) so if you want more discs they can cost between $70 - $200
3. The USB port is for an external hard drive which is NOT included so that will cost $100+ depending on the size but you could fit up to 100,000 songs or more on the bigger ones.
4. An Audio/Video cable is included but any additional cables for example; SVideo, Coaxial or Optical cables will have to be purchased separately.
5. In order to make your own SCDGs you need additional software for around $49 or a deluxe version for $69 from the manufacturer.

PROS

1. The CAVS DVD-203G USB is an average sized components which fits nicely into a home entertainment system or pro rack. It can replace an AC3 Dolby Digital DVD Player and/or 500 CD Carousel. It easily hooked up to my TIVO via the front side AV inputs (White-Red-Yellow RCA plugs) but those without TIVO should look for the same jacks on their VCR or right on the TV. You can also use an S Video connection or the RCA A/V jacks on your home stereo and TV combo. The professionals use the mixer and video directly to a video monitor or video patch bay to sync multiple TVs.
2. Plays every format: DVD/VCD/SCDG/CD+G/CD/CD-R/CD-RW/MP3/JPEG/Kodak Photo CD
3. Excellent sound and arrangement Quality - We tested the Sweet Georgia Brown Magic Tracks with 1208 songs and the quality of the sound and the musical arrangements were excellent.
4. SuperCDGs can be played on your computer. Each retail disc comes with a self contained PC program which loads and plays the hundreds and thousands of songs allowing you to do a karaoke show with just your (DVD equipped) PC or Laptop.
5. It's possible to Make your own SuperCDGs from your old CD+G library or from your MP3 collection of non-Karaoke songs with the optional software.
6. With the CAVS DVD-203G USB Player you can also hook up to an optional CAVS 60, 160 or 250 Gigabyte hard drive for a whopping storage capacity of 100,000 songs.

For the Professional:

• Save Money from buying so many discs
• Save Time from changing discs between singers
• Save Pain from carrying hundreds of discs in cases
• Save the headache from dealing with scratched discs when you swap them out since the need to swap discs it virtually eliminated.
• Mix-Down allows you to make studio type output of your performance to an external recorder or computer

In Conclusion

The trade-offs do not outweigh the values. There were a few added costs for a hard drive and some additional SCDG discs but we now have an expandable system which plays SCDGs. With this unit, the only thing that sets the pros apart from the amateurs is the '7 Rules to Hosting a CAVS Karoke Party

How do I hook up my new DVD/VCR to my tv/Comcast DVR cable box?

I have a new Sony dvd/vcr and cannot figure out how to hook it up to my TV (older Toshiba). I also have Comcast Moxie DVR which is hooked up to the tv as well. That is working fine; I just cannot figure out how to hook up the dvd player. Thanks! Kelly

Your television - unless it is really, really old - should have multiple input source options, with different cabling options (coaxial, composite (red, white, and yellow jacks/plugs), S-Video, component - maybe). If so, you would pick an appropriate output from the DVD/VCR player to match up and run the player in parallel to the DVR cable box. The TV remote would have a toggle switch to allow you go back and forth between input options.

If you have one and only one input to the TV (or, possibly, for other reasons), you can run the DVD/VCR in series between the DVR and TV. Connect your DVR cable box output to a DVD/VCR input jack and the DVD/VCR output to the TV input. You end up playing your DVR/Cable through your DVD/VCR player - a very common setup.

So check your television set input options, and your DVD/VCR input and output options to get an idea about what will work.

You don't mention any software ... like OS or Office or anything ... with some software you might get $120 - $150 for it .... but it would need to be in real good condition ... it isn't much of a computer by today's standards

One of the newest trends in the surveillance system industry concerns digital recording. Only a few years ago, most closed-circuit TV systems were paired with the familiar Time Lapse VCR to record images. However, digital video recorders (DVRs), which record onto hard drives instead of tape, offer a positive alternative.

For businesses that do not want to change tapes constantly, DVRs definitely are the way to go. While security VCRs offer a time-lapse mode that lets them record for long periods of time, they record only one snapshot every eight seconds. To get higher quality, the tapes need to be changed every day, if not more often. DVRs, on the other hand, can record for weeks or even months without the video data needing to be archived or written over. However, if you're on a tight budget and willing to invest in fading technology, good time-lapse VCRs, designed specifically for security use, start at $300 to $400.

When choosing a CCTV camera, consider the space of your surveillance zone: Are you 5 feet or 15 feet away from your surveillance target area?

To determine the field of view required, take photos of the areas to be covered from the proposed camera locations. The type of lens you need depends upon what you want to see, how far away it is and how wide the viewing area. Do you want to capture a person's face or a car license plate? Each camera location will determine which lenses would maximize your surveillance potential. For example: A 4mm wide angle lens will be able to view an area 20' high X 26' wide at 21' away.

Will the cameras be subject to damage? If they will, damage resistant cameras would be a must.

Is the space well lit or dimly lit? Are the lights turned off at night? Do you want to monitor the area with the lights turned off? If so, infrared CCTV cameras will be required.

There are a broad range of video surveillance cameras available to you. Understanding the different kinds will make it easier to determine which will suit the application best.

Outdoor Cameras - Outdoor cameras need to be able to withstand extreme temperatures and humidity and usually come in a weatherproof casing that also helps protect against vandalism.

Infra-Red Cameras - These cameras have infrared LEDs installed around the lens of the camera. This provides the light the camera can use to 'see in the dark' even when no outside light is available. In some low light installations, a day/night camera will work as well.

Day/Night Security Cameras - Day/Night cameras have a super sensitive imaging chip in them. This allows these cameras to work great in low light with no infrared lighting needed. Low light means that there is some light available but not a lot, for example from street lights or even moon light. If your application has absolutely no light then you'll need to use infrared instead.

Bullet Cameras - Bullet cameras are small, compact and can be placed almost anywhere. These cameras are great for covert surveillance. The lens is built into the camera and cannot be switched. The main advantages to the bullet camera are their low cost and their small size.

Mini Security Cameras - Mini cameras are some of the smallest available, but still offer extremely good resolution and are ideal for unobtrusive surveillance. The compact design of these coin cameras make them very easy to hide and difficult to see.

Dome Cameras - Dome cameras are a popular style. Dome cameras present a streamline and professional look to any company, organization or building. They are available in both black & white and color formats. Some dome cameras come in an armor dome to protect against vandalism. Typically, they're only used indoors.

Just like any technology, the more you spend, the better the system you get. But, a low system is better than no video surveillance system at all.

Building Instructions

The best method for creating a practice studio which will let you do live rehearsals and recordings is to follow the instructions in the free brochure Acoustics 101 which you can download from http://www.auralex.com. You'll learn that maximum soundproofing for your music studio requires construction of a "room within a room."

The ideas in this brochure can be used, however, for any sort of room soundproofing project, because the concept it describes takes advantage of the sealed air space which you'll created between the new walls of you music studio and the old walls of the original room. If space allows, you can dampen the noise you'll be making even further by constructing a separate ceiling for your room within a room, but that's not always practical. What will be practical is for you to frame the walls for your new room flat on the floor and then lift them into position.

Adding Soundproofing Material

If you must keep the original ceiling, soundproof it either with mass loaded vinyl (MLV) or a blend of MLV and closed cell foam. When you've finished framing the walls, and measured for dead air space, you can begin soundproofing the new room.

I recommend lining the pockets between the new and old walls with American Mat or a similar foam of closed cell vinyl nitrile, which is usually ¼" thick and will be glued to the studs, joists, and interior cavity walls with contact cement. You won't be filling the cavities with the American Mat; you'll only be lining them.

Adding Insulation and Decoupling

If your room within a room is being constructed in an unheated garage or basement, you might decide that thermal insulation is a good idea. If so, I suggest you use Roxul, a terrific batt insulation of thermal rock wool which also has great Soundproofing properties.

If most of the noise your band makes is low frequency noise coming from either acoustic drums or a bass amplifier, you should now decouple the walls. We'll discuss decoupling methods in further articles, but if you are using high-powered amplifiers ( 4 X 12 cabinets with fifty-watt amps, for example) along with an Ampeg bass system and miked acoustic drums, then you can get by without decoupling.

Finishing Your Home Recording Studio

If you won't be decoupling, then get some more high quality MLV and staple it directly either to the joists or the studs on your assembled walls. Overlap the seams and seal them with OSI acoustical caulk, and then tape them with either heavy PVC or lead tape.

When you've finished sealing the MLV, put in a final layer of 5/8" drywall, buttering its edges with more of the acoustical caulk. Then tape, mud, and paint it, and you're finished! You have your own in-home soundproof recording studio!

Get the new Elite with warranty. You don't want the intercooler (which makes me wonder how hard it's been used) and the 4 games may be pretty duff anyway, buying them 2nd hand will be cheap.

Play and Charge kits are pretty cheap if you want to add one to your Elite.

The last example you gave is the same price as the Elite but used, why even bother including it? And like I said before, the games may be duff and you can always buy 2nd hand cheaply.

None of the games are going to be Halo 3...
