HDTV stands for High Definition Television, and if you live in the USA, Australia, or Japan you may already have experienced it. There are three key differences between HDTV and what's become known as standard definition TV ie regular NTSC, PAL or SECAM. The three differences are; an increase in picture resolution, 16:9 widescreen as standard, and the ability to support multi-channel audio such as Dolby Digital.

The most important aspect of HDTV, and the one which gives it its name is the increased resolution. Standard definition NTSC broadcasts have 525 horizontal lines, and PAL broadcasts are slightly better at 625 lines. In both these systems however, the actual number of lines used to display the picture, known as the active lines, is fewer than that. In addition, both PAL and NTSC systems are interlaced, that is, each frame is spit into two fields, one field is the odd-numbered lines and the other is the even lines. Each frame is displayed alternately and our brain puts them together to create a complete image of each frame. This has an adverse affect on picture quality.

HDTV is broadcast in one of two formats; 720p and 1080i. The numbers refer to the number of lines of vertical resolution and the letters refer to whether the signal is progressive scan, 'p', or interlaced, 'i'. Progressive scan means that each frame is shown in its entirety, rather than being split into fields. Both systems are significantly better quality than either PAL or NTSC broadcasts.

HDTV uses 16:9 widescreen as is its aspect ratio so widescreen pictures are transmitted properly and not letterboxed or panned and scanned. Dolby Digital multichannel sound can be broadcast as part of an HDTV signal, so if you have a surround sound speaker set-up you can use it to listen to TV rather than just DVDs.

To receive an HDTV broadcast you need either a TV with a built-in HDTV tuner or a HDTV receiver which can pick-up off the air HDTV channels, or cable or satellite HDTV like. You also need to live in are where HDTV channels are broadcast or distributed by cable or satellite.

Currently HDTV is widespread in Japan and is becoming commonplace in the US, with most major networks distributing HDTV versions of their popular content. The 2005 Superbowl led to a large increase in the demand for Fox Sports HDTV and cable companies scrambled to add it to their offering in the run up to the game. In Autralia, HDTV uptake was sluggish initially but has increased significantly since 2003.

The situation in Europe is not so bright. There is only one company broadcasting HDTV in the whole of Europe, Euro1080, and it has only two HDTV channels, both in the 1080i format. Euro1080HDe shows major cultural and sporting events to cinemas and clubs around Europe, while HD1 broadcasts sports, opera, rock music, and lifestyle programs via satellite to homes in Europe. UK satellite broadcaster, Sky, which is owned by Fox proprieter Rupert Murdoch, has announced plans to broadcast some HDTV content in 2006. The BBC has also made noises about broadcasting HDTV programs (it already films some programs in HD format).

However, it will be a while before HDTV in Europe catches up with the rest of the world. The controversy created by the confirmation of plans by the UK government to start switching off analogue transmitters in 2008 showed how many people have yet to make the switch to DVB-T. That will be used as an argument to show that there is no appetite in the UK for another major change in TV broadcasting -particularly as most people think they already have 'digital TV' in the form of DVB-T.

Given that television was invented by a Briton, and Europe led the way with PAL for so long, this is a rather sorry state of affairs.

Component Video - Does it work on Standard Def TVs?

I recently purchased a Phillips DVD Recorder with Component Video and S-Video outputs. I then purchased a Insignia 27" Flat Screen Tube TV that claimed to have progressive scanning capabilities and, of course,
component video inputs. When I used the component video cables, the picture flickered quite frequently when there was major colour difference displayed on the screen (changing channels, graphics, etc). I then tried to switch it to "Progressive Scan" on my DVD recorder and it would
not allow me to do so. My question is: When a standard (interlaced )definition TV (480i) claims to have component video capabilities, is this possible considering that it is an interlaced picture rather than a progressive scan picture
(480p)?
Why do tube TV's even have component video inputs?

My old Sony 27" Wega is not progressive scan (480p) but does support component video inputs.

Even without doing progressive scan, component video gives you the best picture quality- even over s-video. The picture quality on that TV was much better than many other larger sets, until you started getting into progressive scan or HD.

t decisions you need to make when buying high definition television is simply which brand and how much to spend.

The problem with listening to advice on buying HDTVs is it's such a personal choice, even for those manning electronics stores and people can be easily swayed into changing their thinking.

For example, one expert may suggest sticking with Sony while another will be loyal to Panasonic. Yet another may be a fan of Samsung while the next salesperson will suggest Sharp. What do you do?

The truth is, buying high definition television shouldn't be difficult and in the final analysis, it's what suits you and your budget, plain and simple. Don't worry if you buy a television and it's not what everyone else is buying. Technology is such today that the life of HDTVs is guaranteed for years and any problems are really minimal.

In this article, we'll look at some of the must haves in a high definition television.

High Definition Television Must Haves

1. Be careful you're not just buying an enhanced def television. You would want your potential new set to have at least 1280 x 720 pixels and at least one HDMI port supporting 1080p.

2. Think ahead to the future. What can your new high definition television support? For example, if you will be in the market for a Blue Ray then make sure that format will be supported.

3. Always test your potential new HDTV set. You can do this by bringing your favorite DVD to the store and asking the sales person whether you can play it. You should not get any arguments. Notice whether the set has problems with fast moving pictures.

4. While cable channels will form the large part of your TV viewing just make sure the set has a tuner built-in. This is because you still want to be able to watch local channels in high definition.

5. Always check you video inputs. You could be forgiven that they would be standard on any high definition television set but it doesn't hurt to check. Connection to cable and a satellite tuner for example rely on these outputs and above all, an HDMI input plus a HDCP support is almost compulsory in today's television viewing climate.

These are just five must haves for ypour new high definition television. The underlying message is always test the unit before exchanging your hard-earned with the vendor. Never take another person's word for it just as a matter of double-checking.

In fact it is the price that is the major selling point, and major advantage, of the traditional CRT TV. The prices of all televisions have been falling, but perhaps none have fallen quite so far and so fast as the prices for these traditional tube televisions. The smallest traditional tube televisions, those of 13" and less, can often be purchased for less than $100, and even the traditional 25" and 27" television models often retail for less than $300. In addition, many traditional tube televisions come with features like built in VCRs, built in DVD players and the like, making them even more versatile and useful.

Even the largest regular tube televisions retail for far less than LCD, plasma and DLP rear projection models. While the price of a 36" traditional tube television may still be over $1,500, the cost of a comparable size LCD or plasma television would be thousands more. Of course it is important to shop around, but in general none but the largest and most feature laden traditional tube televisions will set you back more than about $2,000.

In addition, traditional tube televisions offer true out of the box performance, making them a great choice for those who do not want to go through the hassle of setting up all the accessories that come with the newer technologies. In most cases all the buyer needs to do when purchasing a new CRT TV is to take it out of the box, hook up the cable TV, satellite TV or antenna signal, turn it on and use the remote control to find the channels. It doesn't get much easier than that, and that may be one of the reasons why these televisions continue to command such a large share of the market even after the advent of all those great new television technologies.

What to Look for in a Traditional Tube Television

When shopping for a new traditional tube television, whether as a replacement for an existing TV or for an additional room, it is important to look for the right features and benefits in that TV. One of the most important considerations is the inputs on the unit. The newest traditional tube televisions come equipped with a number of different inputs, not only for cable, satellite and antenna signals, but for computer inputs as well. It is important to look for the presence of a VGA connection, a DVI connection, or preferably both, as these connections will allow you to hook up a computer to the TV display.

Other common inputs on a traditional tube television include inputs for DVD players, VCRs, Laser Disc players and video games. If these inputs are an important consideration it is a good idea to go shopping with that in mind.

The Importance of the Right Cabling

One vital part of the television viewing experience that many television shoppers overlook is the importance of the type of cabling that is used to connect all that great equipment to the television screen itself. Buying cheap generic cables may save you a little money up front, but the lack of quality will be readily apparent to everyone who watches the TV. It is far better to spend a little bit more and to purchase the best cables you can afford. Buying the right cables is one of the best ways to get the most value for your money.

Speaking of value for your money, it is important to shop around as much as possible, whether you are shopping for a traditional tube television, a plasma screen TV, an LCD TV, a DLP TV or any other type of television technology. These days TVs are sold virtually everywhere, from the deepest discount retailers to the most high end specialty stores and electronics retailers. In addition, televisions of all kinds are sold on the internet as well, so shopping online is always a good idea.

When it comes to choosing a brand, there are certainly no shortage of choices. Virtually every electronics manufacturer in the world, from American firms and European manufacturers to all the Asian suppliers, have at least a few models of traditional tube televisions on the market, so shopping around among brands should not be a problem either. One of the many benefits of a traditional tube television is its longevity, and buying an HDTV and DTV ready model will ensure that the TV remains usable no matter what changes may come in the future.

It is also a good idea to choose a traditional tube television with a flat picture tube. This flat screen technology helps to reduce glare and make for a more pleasant viewing experience. The Sony XBR9 series of televisions are their high end elite range of sets, and the Sony KDL-46XBR9 is one of the latest to be released; however, it comes with a fairly hefty price tag. Why don't they use tubes for audio in consumer electronics?

Since tubes are yet considered top notch for audio reproduction,
why aren't they used, then? (Except for the ones they still make and even use yet as far as audiophiles are concerned).

It would be impossible to make an i-Pod (or any MP3 player), i-Phone (or any cell phone), Blackberry, laptop computer, etc. with tubes. They would be *HUGE* and the batteries would be huge.

I have an "antique" portable AM radio that uses tubes. It is ONLY an AM radio and it is the size of a small laptop computer. The batteries alone, are larger than most MP3 players.

I work at a retail store selling Tv's and never heard of the 4150s. I googled it and only UK pages showed. I didn't try sony's website but if you did and didn't find anything then I would suggest to be alert since it might be a scam. I know places like walmart create their own model numbers and when you go to the manufacturer's website...nothing. Trust the manufacter above anyone else , after all they built it.

How do you use an HDTV as a monitor for an iBook g4?

Hey, I have an ibook g4 and a Phillips 42" HDTV (the kind with ambilight) and i wanna use the tv as a monitor for the computer to play movies and others things. The iBook came with a converter which i can use to hook it up to other monitors but i don't know if this is helpful at all when it comes to the tv as it isn't meant to be used as a monitor. Are there some cables i can buy or something?

From what I can tell, the input you will want to use on your TV will be the HDMI. You should be able to use your converter that you have with a DVI to HDMI or VGA to HDMI cable. I'm not sure whether your converter has DVI or VGA.

The home entertainment market was created when the VHS was invented; it brought entertainment to peopleÂ’s living rooms and bedrooms. The VHS progressed to VCDs and DVDs which became the latest in the home entertainment. High Definition Technology

The large screen plasma TVs and the LCD TVs have already been in the markets for some time and are widely acclaimed to have achieved high levels of quality. These are TVs that have a wide, flat screen that minimizes visual distortions dramatically. A large variety of screen sizes are available in display sizes ranging from 20” to 65”. They come with very high resolutions varying from 1024x768 pixels, 1280x768 pixels, 1366x768 pixels, and 1024x1024 pixels. For televisions that are not HD compatible, provisions can be made to make them HD-compliant by minor modifications.
