Home Theater Systems are wonderful pieces of home audio equipment that are prevalent in many homes today. However one of the major issues of today's home theater systems is the massive amount of wires needed to set one up correctly.

If you have ever set-up a normal 2-speaker stereo system you have not even done half of the work it takes to set up a true home theater experience in your home! Most systems today have 5 satellite speakers and one sub woofer. High end systems can have up to 7 satellite speakers and a sub woofer! The wires not only must reach each speaker individually, but also must be of a decent enough quality to not be interfered with by any other electronic devices your wires may pass by. Not to mention the unsightliness of a "rats nest" of wires behind your entertainment system and wires running along the floor and behind furniture.

Enter wireless home theater technology! While wireless home theater systems don't necessarily mean a completely wireless home theater set-up. Mostly the wireless aspects are found in the rear satellite speakers and the sub woofer, the speakers that are furthest away from the source of your sound. And, while there are some great systems on the market, the quality of such systems still have some improvement before they can truly replace a properly wired home theater system. Yet if what's standing in your way of having a great home theater experience is wiring, then this solution is ideal for you!

Another option is to run the wires through the walls. This is what most professional installers do however in order to do it right you must know the layout of the studs in your walls and/or ceilings. You must use proper wiring that you know for sure will not deteriorate over time. And of course, you must know how to patch your walls and ceilings correctly so your work will be neat and not so obvious. You could also hire a contractor for this type of work but it could get quite expensive.

To run the wires underneath your carpet and/or rug is another option. This option is a bit of a pain as well because if not done properly the work can be quite evident if the speaker wires are of any significant thickness.

Both options mentioned above, however, can be quite frustrating when it comes to troubleshooting any issues you have after setting up your home theater system.

In conclusion, the price and level of sophistication you want to put into such a project will probably determine the viability of each option. However, with wireless home theater systems, you are guaranteed less work and easier troubleshooting which equals less frustration and more time enjoying your home theater system with your family and friends. Not to mention all the compliments you will get for the cleanliness and high end nature of your system compared to what others may have at their home!

Where do I place ceiling speakers in my living room?

I have two ceiling speakers that I"m looking to use for just general music listening. I have a long room, about 35' long, which is a combined living room / dining room. There is no one spot that I plan to sit and listen; sometimes I'll be in the dining room area, sometimes in the living room. Where would be a good place to place the two speakers? Right in the middle of the room? On one end and on the other?

DVDs continue to be the prominent medium for home theater entertainment. The technology is being refined and improved upon by a number of manufacturers, making its future slightly uncertain though it is definitely clear that it will continue is one format or another. Many of you have probably been hearing about Blu-ray and HD-DVD discs and their path as the next generation of DVDs. The discrepancies between the two are confusing many home theater buyers, so it's important to know just what each of these new technologies has to offer so that you can make an informed decision on what to purchase and when.

Let's start by discussing just what Blu-ray is. Chances are, if you've stepped into any of the leading home theater and electronics stores in the country, you've seen Blu-ray discs advertised in the DVD section. In truth, Blu-ray discs are somewhat like traditional DVDs, except that they have the ability to record, rewrite, and playback high definition (HD) video that is compatible with the growing number of HD televisions finding their way into home theaters every year. Unlike traditional DVDs, Blu-ray discs can hold nearly five times as much data. On a single layer disc, they can hold 25GB of data, and 50GB can be stored on a dual layer disc. By being able to hold so much more, Blu-ray discs are able to easily store the advanced information necessary to provide content in HD format.

HD-DVD offers the same technology, though it isn't able to hold as much information as Blu-ray. Developed by Toshiba and NEC, it is able to hold three times as much data as traditional DVDs. DVDs continue to be the prominent medium for home theater entertainment. whats the difference between a hd dvd player and blu ray?

I heard blockbuster was only going to sell blu ray dvd's. So before I spend any money on 1 i want to know the difference is.

These two terms are synomous to the early days of numerous VHS format vcr manufacturers or Sony's BETA format versions of VCR's. As we all know, Beta went away and VHS became the norm, except for professional TV news crews who stuck with it due to it's much better qualities,

Blue Ray or HDDV
Each use different technologies to allow High Def movies to be played back on your new HD TV. Problem is, major industries and movie production companies have 'endorsed' one over the other. End result... TWO formats to choose from. Which one will survive? Hard to say at this point.

Which playback machine to buy? Tough decision. Each has some nice attributes and each has some flaws. I would hold out a year or so and see who starts coming out on top of this battle.

Dolby Digital and DTS Digital Surround - Identifying the main differences between these multichannel sound formats

Many audiophiles and home theater enthusiasts argue that DTS surround sound formats can deliver higher quality audio in comparison to their corresponding Dolby formats, with improved dynamic range, better representation of subtle detail in audio content, and improved signal-to-noise ratio.

Partly, this reasoning arises because DTS surround sound is usually encoded at a higher data rate than Dolby Digital and its lineup of associated formats.

This is more than understandable. We are dealing with lossy compression techniques. A higher bit-rate for the same format should normally implies superior sound during playback, as less compression in the encoding process should result in a better representation of the original sound source.

In this Dolby vs DTS debate, DTS people argue that they are after 'sonic perfection, not space consumption' - hence the higher bit rate and lower compression.

Dolby would counteract that their codec is more efficient and therefore, it can run at a lower bit rate.

In other words, one cannot simply draw conclusion on sound quality based on raw bit rates and compression figures alone; it also depends on how well designed are the encoding and decoding algorithms. And this makes sense too, but then...

There are relatively big differences in raw bit rates and compression levels when comparing Dolby vs DTS sound formats, implying a too wide a difference in codec efficiency - about 3 times as much - in favor of Dolby. Is it possible that Dolby sound formats achieve this level of codec efficiency?

The truth is that when dealing with different sound formats, the whole equation starts to get extremely complicated; it is not that easy to define what makes better sound.

This Dolby vs DTS is a much debated issue, but in reality is it true that one is better than the other?

To understand why this Dolby vs DTS surround sound controversy, it is necessary to have an understanding of the main differences between these formats. In particular, there are significant differences in bit-rate and compression levels as applicable to Dolby Digital and DTS Digital Surround. There are also important differences in the way these formats are implemented in movie house applications and in home entertainment.

Thus, while it is objectively possible to compare the resultant sound quality for the same audio format encoded at different bit rates, say in a movie house application and in home entertainment, yet it is not so straightforward when dealing with different formats.

Rather, for identically sourced audio content, it would be much easier for the listener during Dolby vs DTS 'blind' listening tests to notice a change in sound quality when changing the playback equipment between different brands, than when changing from Dolby to DTS. In other words, you need a thoroughly refined audio playback setup to bring out that subtle difference in sound quality between these two formats.

I have a 2005 Ford Explorer and an 80 Gig iPod video. The most important thing I want in the receiver/dvd player is a good interface to control the iPod - It should be clear, easy to use and should fully control the iPod.

When dealing with indash systems , i would recomend to save up a little more and get a pioneer or kenwood, which run for a about $700+ (double din) maybe $600+ (single din). Unless you really are not planning on keeping your car for much longer than a year.

I have a kenwood double din i bought in best buy and it works great and i spent 800 with tax and all , it has everything u want and has never acted up ( ive had it almost 2 years now) on the other hand my friend bought some Dual or something (cheap brand) looked great worked great but broke down within 5 months, and when you used it too long it would over heat.

Best Buy is your best bet because if it ever brakes they replace it and then they deal with the company, other places make u go through the hassle of sending it to the manufacture and waiting 1 month to get it back

Setting up a home theater today is easier than it was just a few short years ago. Home theaters used to consist of a tower of components housed in an entertainment system that took up a lot of space. Today's basic home theater systems are compact, low-profile and high quality. They also take up less space and have an improved viewing angle.

There's no doubt that the screen or flat screen TV are the focal point of the system. Although setting up an LCD projector is a popular choice, many people start off with a large, flat screen TV which offers an amazing, high-definition picture. A screen size of 46" or larger is a nice sized screen that the whole family can gather around. Most new flat screen TVs today offer a viewing angle larger than 178 degrees, which makes it easy for everyone to see and enjoy the picture. The TV should be placed in the center of the viewing area, which usually is the center of the room.

Another nice way to set up a home theater using a flat screen TV is to mount it on the wall to help provide the best viewing angle. Doing this takes up less floor space and if installed correctly, you won't see any wires, giving your TV the appearance that it's floating. There are a variety of flat screen TV wall mounts available. These include TV brackets that tile, swivel, extend out on an arm or there are even some that are motorized. You can easily get away with a flat screen TV wall mount that just tilts up and down since the viewing angle of your TV should be more than 178 degrees. Motorized wall mounts give your mini home theater that nice, finishing touch and "wow" factor when friends and relatives come over to watch the game.

When buying a flat screen TV wall mount, be sure to get one that matches the finish of your TV. Most come in either black or silver. It should also, of course be made of metal (I haven't seen plastic TV wall mounts, but I'm sure they're probably out there). If you TV is made for a VESA compatible mount (most are) then any VESA universal TV wall mount with your TV's VESA specification will work for you.

Make sure you install the wall mount in the correct place on the wall where the mount is secured to wall studs and not just the drywall. This is one of those common sense tips, but plenty of people have tried to get away with not securing the mount to studs. The brackets are solid and secure but what they're holding up is a fragile (and expensive) piece of electronics.

Also be sure that any in-wall wiring is done to the proper electrical codes. Power cables should not be run through the wall. You should have an electrical outlet installed near the flat screen TV. A mini surge suppressor is also highly recommended.

With the right research and planning, you'll soon have your mini home theater installed and you'll be enjoying movies, sports or your favorite reality show on your large, flat screen TV that's mounted to the wall. I'll bring the popcorn!

Is 3000 lumens too bright of a projector for a small room?

I have a 800 sq. ft. apartment. My living room, where I'll have the projector, is about 10 x 25. Im looking for a projector that I will be using on a regular basis for tv(hd satelite box), movies(standard dvd for now), and video games(xbox 360 with hdmi hookups). Im not sure how many lumens I need. I'm just a little afraid of the picture being not bright enough since I will be using the projector on a daily basis and anything but a perfect picture will get annoying.Outside light will not be a problem because I will be blacking out the windows with 100% window tint. Not sure what screen size I'll be going with but will probably be a 100 inch motorized screen.

3000 lumens is WAY too bright. If you have light control in the room you won't need more than 1000-1200 lumens (That is rated brightness, when adjusted for best colour 400-500 lumens is fine).

Read some of the reviews at the 1st link ... for HT use on a screen about 100" you don't need more.

You don't specify a price range, but based on the proposed projectors you appear to be considering the $1000 and up range. I'll assume
you are not thinking a 1080p projector ($2200 and up) ... so will focus on 720p models. That said, the projectorcentral.com site has a listing of recommended HT projectors on the home page ... a good place to start re a number of models that are highly rated.

I would recommend a Home theatre model rather than a conference room/business projector. They are not as bright because light control is assumed, but generally are quieter (cooling fans), have better colour accuracy, and superior video processing.

The calculator at the second link not only helps determine distance to fit a screen size, but also indicates acceptable brightness ranges based on use type/room. Have a look for an approriate projector for your room in concert with this projector. Also see the viewing distance calculator (3rd link) as a starting point given your room dimensions.

Two to consider in the $1300 range are the Panasonic PT-AX200U and Sanyo PLV-Z5 (A comparative review is provided at the 4th link). A somewhat less expensive alternative is the Benq W500 (under $1000) -- Review at the 5th link.

Add the DIY Screen section at AVS Forum (6th link) and you have everything in terms of info to build a great screen for under $100 (in case you would rather put $$ saved on a screen into a better projector.

How many times have you walked through the electronics section of a department store or big box discount store to examine the home theater set-ups? When are you going to finally do it? Which home theater audio system should I buy?

I am looking to buy a home theater audio system and my budget is around $1000. Which one should I get? Is there a credible website that has a buyers guide/reviews of home theater audio systems?

7(sets) - banana plugs (i have a 7.1 system)
all of these cables came to me quickly and are high quality cables.
