I'm guessing you mean you have an HTIB (home theater in a box), so Toslink is your best bet. It is a pure digital transmission with zero electromagnetic interference (because it's literally pulses of light, not an electric signal carried over an inducible copper wire).

While the Sc-PT760 is excellent value at between $300-$400 it must be pointed out this model is really suited to movie watchers rather than music listeners. But you get great "bang for your buck" with this 5.1 channel home theater in a box.

We all hate cables running all over the floor, especially when they are not easily hidden. We just invested in a top-notch home theater system. We have a great video monitor, an audiophile quality home theater receiver, and some great speakers. So far, so good. Now it's time to connect the rear channel surround speakers. Agh! Our system look was just degraded from Star Trek to Mad Max. This is an obvious application for wireless, right?

Actually, there are some serious problems with using wireless techniques for surround sound channels.

Time Lag:

Wireless surround systems have a processing/transmission time lag that makes the sound from the rear channels out of sync with the audio from the front speakers. The inherent time required to generate the signal, transmit it to the speaker, decode the signal, and finally, to amplify the signal for the speaker causes the time offset. Minimal audio processing latency is required for effective surround sound.

The sound from the different speakers should be heard at the same instant. For most installations, the rear channels are closer to the listener than the front channels. For this reason, Dolby Digital and Dolby Surround Pro Logic systems apply a delay of a few milliseconds for the surround sound channels. The timing is that critical.

When humans hear the same sound from different directions, the illusion is created that the sound's source is a phantom location between the sound's sources. Recording engineers use balance controls to simulate sounds across the sound field, allowing them to locate sounds to different perceived locations across the sound stage. Timing is critical between surround channels where depth and location information are to be determined by the ears, and ultimately, by the brain.

Interference:

The second problem with wireless surround systems is interference. There are multiple technologies used for wireless surround, and the source of interference is specific to the technology.

Both Bluetooth and Wi-Fi devices operate within the 2.4 GHz band. Bluetooth is the technology that is used frequently for wireless keyboards and mice, but the capability of Bluetooth systems is marginal for surround sound applications. A Bluetooth signal power is only about 1 milliwatt. Dolby Digital requires a bandwidth of about 400 Kbps and Dolby DTS uses a bandwidth of about 450 Kbps for a 5.1 system. Bluetooth has a maximum data transfer rate of 433 Kbps, which is cutting it pretty close.

Another alternative for surround sound transmission is Wi-Fi 802.11b (also in the 2.4 GHz band, as is 802.11g ). An 802.11b signal is capable of 54 Mbps maximum throughput (30 Mbps in practice), which is more than sufficient for this application.

However, there are significant sources of interference in this 2.4 GHz spectrum from cordless phones, other Wi-Fi equipment like wireless-enabled laptops, wireless game controllers, fluorescent lights, and even microwave ovens. Even bad electrical connections can cause broad Rf spectrum emissions.

Bluetooth attempts to avoid interference by "frequency-hopping". If the signal is receiving interference, it will (hopefully) only be for a fraction of a second, because the system will identify the interference, and switch to a different frequency. Wi-Fi also has the ability to avoid interference by changing channels, and by redundant loops of information transmission Many Wi-Fi products claim to mange interference problems. Unfortunately, the products are limited by the capabilities of the 802.11 chipsets, and the 802.11 protocol itself.

IR (infrared), which is most often used by remote controls, is yet another technology sometimes used for wireless surround. IR has a bandwidth capability of more than 100 Mbps. IR for data transmission was popular on laptop computers a few years ago. More recently, it has been replaced by other wireless technologies such as Bluetooth, because they don't need a direct line of sight (LOS). IR transmission is lost whenever there is a loss of LOS between the transmitter and the receiver, and, in addition, the signal is subject to interference from IR remote controls and ambient light.

Power:

A third problem is that the rear speakers will require a power source if they are receiving the signals wirelessly. They will need power not only for the actual speakers, but they will also need power for an on-board amplifier. If our goal is to eliminate all wires, this is a problem. Powercast (Pittsburgh, PA) has a technology that will wirelessly supply power to small appliances like cell phones, but the maximum rate is 10-15 watts, not enough for surround channels.

On a final note, if you decide to purchase a wireless surround system, read the product attributes carefully. I recently assisted on an installation where a DVD/Receiver system was bought with wireless capability. However, in this case, the wireless capability was for distribution to a second room for the primary channels, not a wireless capability for surround channels.

NO you can't use your sub from your car for the maiun reason that a home theater sub and a car sub run at different ohms meaninig that your going to ruin your sub or your home theater amp. Also you bought a home theater in a box with a dvd player. You usually can only use what they give you based on the amount of distortion and ohms those home theater systems run on. Next time buy a true home theater system without a dvd player built in so you can have a powered sub where you can turn the volume up and down on the sub or the receiver plus home theater in a box 10% distortion. The idea behind a samsung/sony/lg/panasonichome theater in a box with dvd player are for ease of use but you lose quality and longevity compared to even a lower end Home theater in a box without dvd player ie yamaha yht-390 (priced usually 369.99 to 329.99 at best buy) less than 1% distortion. Also you could replace the yamaha sub with a different powered sub becuase the yamaha system is a basic reciever which runs at 8 ohms at which all or most stand alone home theater subs run 8ohms..

Going out to the movies is becoming a very expensive activity. Not only have ticket prices gone up in the last few years, it seems that drinks, popcorn and candy have all had price increases. Couple this with the drop in prices on high end electronics and recent advances such as Blu-ray, and it is no wonder that ticket sales and continuously been dropping off as more and more people are opting to set up "Home Theaters".

Why don't they use tubes for audio in consumer electronics?

Since tubes are yet considered top notch for audio reproduction,
why aren't they used, then? (Except for the ones they still make and even use yet as far as audiophiles are concerned).

It would be impossible to make an i-Pod (or any MP3 player), i-Phone (or any cell phone), Blackberry, laptop computer, etc. with tubes. They would be *HUGE* and the batteries would be huge.

I have an "antique" portable AM radio that uses tubes. It is ONLY an AM radio and it is the size of a small laptop computer. The batteries alone, are larger than most MP3 players.

The central unit of the Philips HTS3544 home theater system is both an AV receiver and a DVD player (with 720p, 1080i output resolution). This set consist of 4 satellite speakers, 1 center channel speaker and 1 sub-woofer. It is a 5.1 channel sound system and produce audio with 1000w of power. It also comes with a radio tuner that can save up to 40 radio station presets.

Design:

The Philips HTS3544 home theater system comes in silver and black. Except for the central unit/DVD player, the coloration of both models is similar (black). The front of the DVD player has a glossy surface. In the silver model, the surface has an almost mirror-like appearance. The speakers sport a very simple and minimalist design, rectangle in shape with black mesh in front. In fact they were so simple that I wish Phillips would add a little edge to it. Nevertheless, the design is practical and can easily blend in with other designs.

One of the biggest selling factor of the Philips HTS3544 home theater system will have to be its iPod dock. My iPod fits perfectly with the dock and it charges my iPod too while it is docked. It can easily fill a small or medium sized room with rich and clear audio. I noticed that the sounds produced by the speakers are quite focused on the direction that the speakers are pointed. This is great as it prevents the sound from traveling into other parts of a house while it is on high volume. The DVD player also up-scale DVD movies to 1080i.

Overall:

For a home theater system that costs around $130 each (at the time of writing), the Philips HTS3544 home theater system proves to be a great buy, giving you great value for your money. If may not have some of the features found on $800 systems, but the audio quality produced is comparable to more expensive, high-end sound systems.

What is the best surround sound dvd home theater?

I am looking for a good quality home theater system as a present for my son. Every time I find something I think might be good, I find there are some horribly bad ratings by consumers. Has anyone bought one up to the 500-dollar range that they like, can play games, listen to music, TV, easy to install, and all around nice sound that won't break down in a month or two?

You get more options and room for expansion if you buy a separate receiver, DVD player and speakers. If you want the ease of one-stop shopping, the Onkyo HT-S5200 is a decent entry-level home theater in a box (HTIB). It's a good compromise between the limits placed on you by all of the DVD-based HTIBs out there and the expanding your son may want to do down the road. Amazon has it for $494. Onkyo has a good reputation among a/v geeks (like me) because of their quality products.

Going out to the movies is becoming a very expensive activity. Not only have ticket prices gone up in the last few years, it seems that drinks, popcorn and candy have all had price increases. Couple this with the drop in prices on high end electronics and recent advances such as Blu-ray, and it is no wonder that ticket sales and continuously been dropping off as more and more people are opting to set up "Home Theaters".

Why can't I get sound from my tv through my home theater system?

I have a sony bravia home theater model # dav-hdx285. My tv is a sharp 42 inch model # lc42sb45u.I've hooked up as follows:coaxial cable from wall to cable box, cable box to tv, tv to theater.i followed the manual still doesn't work. Even emailed sony, did everything they said but it didn't work either. DVDS & cds are fine through the system, just can't get tv sound through theater system.

YOU NEVER HOOK UP AN HTS SYSTEM FROM THE TV OUTPUT!!!

THE TV DOES NOT PROCESS SURROUND SOUND AND ALL YOU ARE GETTING IS 2 CHANNEL (LEFT &RIGHT) SOUND. THE RECEIVER IS CONFUSED AND CAN'T PROCESS IT. THE RED AND WHITE CABLES...COME ON GUYS. THAT MEANS RED IS ONE CHANNEL AND WHITE IS ONE CHANNEL. THERE IS NO CENTER, REAR OR SUBWOOFER CHANNELS BEING SENT TO THE RECEIVER.

First of all your cable box needs to be new enough to have multiple outputs for different hook ups. If it only has coax going out to the TV you are hosed? Then you need to upgrade your cable box. You should have the right one since you are using a 42" LCD HD TV.

It should be like this - Cable box output goes to the HTS using component cables or an HDMI cable. The HTS decodes the audio and sends it to the speakers in surround (if the broadcast is in 5.1) Then the video goes to the TV using either an HDMI cable, component cables (red,blue,green) from the HTS or a separate digital optical cable from the cable box.

Anyway...the only way you should have this hooked up is wall > cable box > home theater > TV

Basic setup principals for Home Theater is everything runs to the HTS first and then out to the TV.

EDIT > I just looked up your HTS and it has everything you need to hook it up right. Now you just need to check on the back of the cable box. It would be best not to use the coax but if that is all it has then you are stuck with it. Run that line into the HTS coax input. Then go the superstore and get an HDMI cable to run from the HTS to the TV. Don't buy the one that is $70 bucks. They are just ripping you off. Buy the cheapest one they have...just make sure it is long enough to reach from the back of the HTS to the back of the TV. Plug it in and then switch the TV to the correct input setting (your TV will have several input modes depending on which HDMI port you plugged it into you will need to switch the TV input mode to that plug number. Should be on the remote control. Again, your cable box should be HD compatible since you have an HD TV or you need to upgrade to HD cable to fully enjoy the TV and surround sound.

Almost everybody would like a home theater with great surround sound and bass. But, many can't handle the hassle of selecting and setting up the equipment. how to fix home theater subwoofer surround?

i have recently acquired a infinity home theater system that includes two small back speakers and the surround around the cone as completely come apart and the same goes for the subwoofer....i need a very cheap way to fix this if possible...

There is no cheap fix. If there was, you'd still have a cheap speaker. Many "systems" are the worst offenders to my ear. The contracted parts they get, from China most likely, are the most substandard parts I have ever seen. They have to be cheap or no one will buy them. The mark up in those systems is unbelievable. You got what you paid for. As far as I am concerned, you need to replace the entire system with a decent quality matched speaker set. Personally, I have not heard a system that was good to me that didn't cost less than $2K. The problem that many people make is either they get good speakers & a cheap receiver/amp or bad speakers & too powerful of an amp. That will always destroy one or the other. My recommendation, and I say this from experience in what I have, is to get a Yamaha RX-V863 receiver, and Polk Audio RTi series speakers. I have something similar to what I linked you, but for a smaller room. If you got that route, you will get satisfaction from your surround. Be prepared to drop about $3K.
