How does impedance relate to sound quality in home audio speakers?

I am in need of new speakers for my new home theater system, however as tech savy as I am, speakers are not my forte. The current speakers I run are 8 Ohm impedance, 150W, 91DB Sound pressure, with 36Hz-22Khz range. These are Onkyo Fusion AVs. I need a good pair of slim line speakers, and I have found a few that I like however I am not sure how they compare with my current set.

You want your speakers to handle your system's output power, so you'll need at least 150W speakers.

The 91 dB sound pressure is an indication of the efficiency of the speakers. Higher is more efficient, lower is less efficient. Remember that dB is logarithmic, so a 3 dB change is a factor of 2 (88 dB uses twice the power to sound as loud as your 91 dB speakers).

A key spec of the frequency range was left out, and that is the variation from one frequency to another -- i.e. +/- 3 dB. Ideally, you'd like +/- 0 dB so all frequencies would sound the same with the same power input, but that's not going to happen, so most spec how close they come to the ideal. A speaker with +/- 0.5 dB across the frequency range will sound far more accurate that one that is +/- 3 dB (remember that 3 dB is a factor of 2).

The wider and flatter (+/- 0dB) the frequency range, the better.

Impedance by itself generally doesn't relate to sound quality; you just need to match your amplifier's preference for best results.

But remember that the specs are the manufacturer's specs, not independently certified specs. You'd do well to consult audio review magazines for their test results of the speakers you're thinking of instead of believing the manufacturer's specs. They aren't perfect, either, but they will probably be more objective than the OEM.

I own the 64u that has a 4ms response time and have never had any motion blur or ghosting. With your 62u at 6ms you shouldn't be getting any either. I would agree with the others and say it is probably the signal you are receiving. Try another source and see if you have the same issues.

Is this a proper Earth Connection?

Hi all!
I have a home theater system, and was having sort of unwanted humming sound from the speakers (especially from the subwoofer). I've thought that it was caused by the electrical surges of AC . As a matter of fact, I have purchased a surge protector (Belkin Pure AV) in order to filter them. The problem is that the surge protector needs an earth connection to work properly. I opened up the AC socket on the wall, and found out that there wasn't a ground connection there. I thought that the boiler I use must be grounded because it's a necessity for it to work properly. As a solution, I grabbed a wire and hooked it up to the radiator which is connected to the boiler. Then I checked out the surge protector indicator showing that the protection system works properly. So, it works fine, and I got rid of the humming sound mostly. All I'm trying to find out is if the earth connection I made is a correct way, or is it safe?

The ground wire is for excess fault voltage. It carries away mostly static, (your problem exactly). The ground you used for a single outlet should be fine. A surge protector shoots off voltage ( the suppressed voltage rating should be on the surge protector like 330v) to ground. The basic protection of the surge is very high spikes like lightning or a power company fault. But the wire you installed is good for noise on electrical systems. Make sure you put the grounding wire on the green screw that grounds the strap of the outlet. Do Not put the wire you installed on with the white wire on the silver screw. This will cause just the opposite effect and may cause you to be shocked while using the equipment or damage the circuitry.

Having the correct equipment when training your dog is essential. It needs to be fit for the purpose to get the best out of your training session. So what is the best equipment for your dog for training?

Whatever equipment you use with your dog, do check it regularly. Check:

• for wear and tear.

• that it still fits correctly. This is especially important with growing puppies.

• for signs of chewing, which could weaken it.

Essential equipment for all dogs:

• A normal collar with either a buckle or clip. It should not have any tightening action, such as a choke or half-check chain.

• A lead. A lead of 4-6 foot is ideal. If it is shorter than this, you may find that your dog will pull more, as he cannot get away from the tight feeling. If it is longer, it can be difficult to control your dog. Most people prefer nylon, leather or canvas leads. Chain can be used, but this can be very uncomfortable.

• Some form of poop scoop is also essential each time you take your dog out.

Alternative equipment:

Head collars work on a similar principle to a horse's head collar, in that they control the head. They are extremely useful with dogs that pull, jump up at passers-by and are more difficult to control. It will not teach your dog how to behave, but it will make it easier to control him while you are teaching. Many dogs are not impressed at first and may scratch and shake their heads. Take your time and introduce it gradually, following the manufacturer's guidelines.

Harnesses are favoured by many people when walking their dogs. It means that if the dog does pull, it will not hurt his neck. However, many dogs can pull more strongly with a harness, and dogs who are required to pull, for example, sled dogs and tracking dogs, would wear a harness for this purpose.

For dogs who pull, there are relatively new types of harness available. They are designed to help while teaching a dog not to pull. They work by putting pressure in a different place when the dog pulls, and therefore he cannot lean into it as he does with a collar. An extending or retractable lead consists of a box which you hold, with a line that extends as your dog pulls. There is a brake to stop. These are useful when you are in a situation where your dog can have more freedom, but cannot safely be off his lead. Please be careful - if they are used near traffic, dogs can still be involved in accidents.

A long line, or old washing line, can be useful when your dog can have some freedom but is not safe off the lead, or when teaching a dog to come when called. Some people find it difficult to use as the excess lead can get tangled. Take care with big or strong dogs - consider wearing gloves to avoid rope burn on your hands. It may be beneficial to use under guidance from an experienced trainer.

Poop-scoop, plastic bag etc. Never leave home without these. Even if you don't need them for your dog, you may be able to donate one to another owner!

audio delay in combo dvd stereo receiver to tv.?

Got a newer dlp tv, hooked up my older onkyo combo dvd stereo receiver to it through video line 1 using yellow, red and white rca. Playing a dvd now there is a slight delay from the speakers in tv and the combo stereo speakers. Very annoying if trying to use both tv and stereo audio. The stereo seems to have the delay. My seven year old three lens rear projection samsung did not have this problem as with this samsung. Why does it do this and is there anything I can do about it...

Goldfish is correct and here's why. Because today's TVS have so many different ways of receiving a signal, the audio must be processed 'decoded' before it can be sent or reproduced.The term is latency. When viewing broadcast received by the set itself, the processor can sync the audio and video because the process is all internal to the set. When an external device such as a separate audio amplifier, the audio and video now take separate paths and are sent through separate processors. The processors do not have the intelligence to re-sync the AV.
As for correction, Some service provided receivers " Cable , Satellite and such " offer audio delay in the user menus. If this is not the case you will simply need to experiment with wiring options. The only other option I can think of would be to purchase a audio processor that provides variable delay.

When you are setting up your home theater you need to decide on what is the best way for you to watch. Many people would not have anything other than a projector as it adds to the cinema theme as well as giving you a very good image as big as you want. But many others do not want to deal with projectors and screens and would rather have the convenience of a TV style screen that you just turn on and play the DVD in as you would in any other room but on a bigger screen.

If you are using a projector then it is a good idea to make sure that your room has good thick curtains so that you can block the light from the room. As the image is produced through a projected light then it is best to use a projector in a fairly dark room. With some of the latest projectors they have a light sensor so that if the light is too bright for the image then it brightens the light to make it stronger. If you want ease of use and a great quality picture and are happy either to have a smaller screen, or you are able to pay for a very big one, then plasma might be best for you. But a projector can give you a really good quality image that is as big as you want and there are some very good projectors that are very cheap. But you also have to set up the screen as well as the projector whenever you want to see a movie. But whatever you choose it is always worth trying it out in the store so that you can see which is the best for you.

If you are putting together a home theater system and have already purchased a projector, you are now ready to buy a screen. While a variety of screens are out on the market to choose from, they can be classified into three basic categories.

Fixed Screen

The first choice is to install a fixed screen in your home entertainment room. The advantage of this type of screen is that because it is fixed on the wall, it can cover the wires and cables. Consumers today seem to be drawn to the new age of home theater systems that are space-saving such as soundbars and tiny home-theater-in-a-box systems (HTIBs). If you care about sound, and want the convenience of an all-in-one package then the Yamaha YHT-791BL would be the one to choose.

Standard HTIBs typically come with speakers that are very light, but the YHT-791BL isn't a regular HTIB. The two front speakers weigh over eight pounds and stand 13 inches tall. i purchased a set of Acoustic Audio GX350 speakers but i don't what kind of amp to get.?

They can handle up to 1000 watts. I also want to know the best placement for these in my trunk to maximize sound quality and loudness.
