Will it make a difference to wire my 300 watt system with a higher end kit that includes a capacitor?

The amp for the mono sub is 175 x 1 RMS power. The amp for the rear speakers is 60 x 2 RMS power. It is basically a 300 watt system. Will it sound any better with an installation kit that includes a capacitor?
The battery is new and so is the system. The speakers are higher end ones. I just don't want to spend more money if it won't make a differnce or its as good as its going to get.

You are reading this because you purchased some outdoor speakers and you need some guidance on hook up, right? Well then this is the article you have been looking for! In this session we will discuss the tips and techniques on hooking up your stereo/amplifier in your home to your outside sound systems. We will also give you some do's and don'ts along the way to make your install go that much easier.

Step one: place your stereo/amplifier in a convenient place. When I say convenient, I mean so that it can be accessed by you and your guests so that it can be easily operated. If you wish to control it with a remote then you will need to place it somewhere that it has direct line of sight to. If you don't want it messed with, then you will want to place it in a cabinet or on a shelf. Wherever you decide to place it, just make sure it has adequate space to dissipate heat. When they are in full operation they can create a lot of heat and heat build-up can destroy an amplifier in a short amount of time.

Step two: plan out your wire routing so that your wires from your outside speakers gets to your amplifier in the most direct way. What I mean by this, is that you want to keep your wire lengths as short as possible. This keeps the strain off your amplifier and prolongs its life. But I understand that if you have a big slab of concrete between your speakers and your amp, then you will be better off running the lines around rather than trying to punch a hole through the concrete. It is always best to make your wires hidden, no one wants to see stray wires just jetting out of the wall and draped across the floor. You will also need to make sure that you seal the holes you make to the exterior of your home or building with a high quality sealant. You can find these at your local home improvement center and you have many choices in grade and color, so you should be able to find what works for your application. This is a crucial step as moisture and pests can and will get into these holes no matter how small you think they are. Don't skip this step!

Step three: hook up the wires as described by your amplifiers manufacturer. Be sure to keep your polarity correct when hooking up to your outdoor speakers. Most speaker wire is marked with a stripe or color to help you keep this straight, so utilize it. You also will want to make sure that you are not putting too much load on the amplifier by putting too many sets of speakers on one line. For the most part you will be hooking up only one speaker per channel, but if you plan to do this, then you will need to read our article on hooking up multiple sets of speakers. But for now we will just concentrate on hooking up one pair. Check the ohm resistance on the speakers you have. 95% of them will be rated at 8ohms. The same applies to your amplifiers resistance capabilities, although some amps and speakers can have multiple resistance values for more flexible installations. Be sure you check your technical information that came with yours to be sure.

Step four: once you have placed your amplifier, run your wires, concealed them and sealed out the bugs and weather and after you have hooked everything up, make sure you have connected everything right. After you have done this you are ready to sit back, relax and turn up the volume of your favorite tunes relaxing out on your deck or patio!

I have a sub and amp wired at 2 ohms, and want to know if I can add a pair of 4 ohm 6X9s Do they have to be 2?

Infinity Reference 12" Sub (2 or 8 ohms) wired at 2 . Infinity Reference 600w amp (2 or 4 ohms) wired at 2. I want to add Infinity Reference 6X9s, but the ones I found are the 9612i, which are 4 ohm speakers? Can I add them, or do they have to be 2 ohm speakers? I also want to add front car speakers, do these have to be 2 ohm as well?

You should not run the 6x9s on the same amp as your sub.
The sub woofers amplifier power should be reserved for low frequencies.

4 ohm speakers can be used in a 2 ohm amplifier circuit, but will reduce the effective power of the amplifier.

As for the question on ohms:
a parallel circuit will reduce the ohms of a speaker pair by half.
(Positives together, and Negatives together, side by side)
a series circuit will double the ohms of a speaker pair.
(Positive connected to Negative, with the speakers in a chain)

There has been lots of talk about the CAVS Karaoke Players so we thought we'd take the time to test one of the more popular models. The DVD-203G USB has all the usual features like 2 mic inputs with echo, programmable song ordering, numeric keypad to access any number song, parental control, digital Key control and Voice cancelling on multiplex discs but here we'll cover pros and cons on important points of interest.

CONS

Professionals will not use the supplied microphone. To my ear, as a professional I like to use high quality mics so the singers always sound their best. That being said, the average “consumer ear” may find that the supplied CAVS microphone sounds just fine.

There are no fancy video graphics like you see with the 12" laser discs. What you get is backup tracks of CD quality music with the song's lyrics on your monitor or TV

There are several ala carte extras to consider before buying a CAVS DVD-203G USB as follows:

1. The unit has two mic inputs but only comes with one microphone as was mentioned above. You might want a second for all those duets.
2. Most packages include 1 disc (up to 1250 songs) so if you want more discs they can cost between $70 - $200
3. The USB port is for an external hard drive which is NOT included so that will cost $100+ depending on the size but you could fit up to 100,000 songs or more on the bigger ones.
4. An Audio/Video cable is included but any additional cables for example; SVideo, Coaxial or Optical cables will have to be purchased separately.
5. In order to make your own SCDGs you need additional software for around $49 or a deluxe version for $69 from the manufacturer.

PROS

1. The CAVS DVD-203G USB is an average sized components which fits nicely into a home entertainment system or pro rack. It can replace an AC3 Dolby Digital DVD Player and/or 500 CD Carousel. It easily hooked up to my TIVO via the front side AV inputs (White-Red-Yellow RCA plugs) but those without TIVO should look for the same jacks on their VCR or right on the TV. You can also use an S Video connection or the RCA A/V jacks on your home stereo and TV combo. The professionals use the mixer and video directly to a video monitor or video patch bay to sync multiple TVs.
2. Plays every format: DVD/VCD/SCDG/CD+G/CD/CD-R/CD-RW/MP3/JPEG/Kodak Photo CD
3. Excellent sound and arrangement Quality - We tested the Sweet Georgia Brown Magic Tracks with 1208 songs and the quality of the sound and the musical arrangements were excellent.
4. SuperCDGs can be played on your computer. Each retail disc comes with a self contained PC program which loads and plays the hundreds and thousands of songs allowing you to do a karaoke show with just your (DVD equipped) PC or Laptop.
5. It's possible to Make your own SuperCDGs from your old CD+G library or from your MP3 collection of non-Karaoke songs with the optional software.
6. With the CAVS DVD-203G USB Player you can also hook up to an optional CAVS 60, 160 or 250 Gigabyte hard drive for a whopping storage capacity of 100,000 songs.

For the Professional:

• Save Money from buying so many discs
• Save Time from changing discs between singers
• Save Pain from carrying hundreds of discs in cases
• Save the headache from dealing with scratched discs when you swap them out since the need to swap discs it virtually eliminated.
• Mix-Down allows you to make studio type output of your performance to an external recorder or computer

In Conclusion

The trade-offs do not outweigh the values. There were a few added costs for a hard drive and some additional SCDG discs but we now have an expandable system which plays SCDGs. With this unit, the only thing that sets the pros apart from the amateurs is the '7 Rules to Hosting a CAVS Karoke Party

How do I hook up my new DVD/VCR to my tv/Comcast DVR cable box?

I have a new Sony dvd/vcr and cannot figure out how to hook it up to my TV (older Toshiba). I also have Comcast Moxie DVR which is hooked up to the tv as well. That is working fine; I just cannot figure out how to hook up the dvd player. Thanks! Kelly

Your television - unless it is really, really old - should have multiple input source options, with different cabling options (coaxial, composite (red, white, and yellow jacks/plugs), S-Video, component - maybe). If so, you would pick an appropriate output from the DVD/VCR player to match up and run the player in parallel to the DVR cable box. The TV remote would have a toggle switch to allow you go back and forth between input options.

If you have one and only one input to the TV (or, possibly, for other reasons), you can run the DVD/VCR in series between the DVR and TV. Connect your DVR cable box output to a DVD/VCR input jack and the DVD/VCR output to the TV input. You end up playing your DVR/Cable through your DVD/VCR player - a very common setup.

So check your television set input options, and your DVD/VCR input and output options to get an idea about what will work.

With the increasing popularity of HDTV, watching a DVD movie at home is a great entertainment experience. The picture is sharp, clear, and vibrant. But what about the sound? After all, that is one of the real attractions of going to a movie theater, the wraparound sound that lets you hear every detail. So is there a way to bring that kind of audio into our homes too? Absolutely!

Actually surround sound has been around for a while now in one form or another, but it just never had a platform to bring it into the mainstream before HDTV and digital media like the DVD became so prevalent. But now by combining the right equipment, a person can actually very closely simulate the movie theater experience right in the comfort of their home whenever they want.

For surround sound, you will need three things, (1) a digital source that has surround sound already encoded into it such as a DVD or a HDTV broadcast, (2) equipment to decode that surround sound signal, and (3) at least 6 speakers including a subwoofer to take full advantage of the most popular 5.1 surround sound format. It's called 5.1 because it use 5 channels of sound to drive 5 separate speakers, and the .1 stands for the low-frequency subwoofer.

Once you have the equipment you need to establish a surround sound setup that will be right for your home. Much of the seating area will be determined by the size and type of TV that you have. If it is a 40" HDTV, which is a very common size, you can probably sit about 5-8 feet away and not notice any degradation in the picture quality. Just experiment with the seating distance until it seems comfortable though. Then the two front speakers usually flank the TV, but make sure that they are wide enough to form a triangle with the seating area so everyone will be in the sound sweet spot.

The two back speakers are often placed somewhere around the seating area and faced either to a side or rear wall. The middle speaker needs to be situated somewhere close to the TV, and the subwoofer can be put anywhere in the room that you like, since it puts out such low frequency bass that seems to come from everywhere.

Every room has different listening characteristics though due to it's configuration and furnishings, so feel free to experiment around until you find the combination that works best for you. A surround sound installation may seem challenging, but it's just simply getting the right equipment and placing the speakers where they produce the best overall sound.

A couple of good brand names for turntables are Thorens, Sota, Riga, and Dual.

You only need 1 turntable, but you also need a good phono cartridge. High-end turntables usually don't come with preinstalled cartridges. (Really high-end turntables often don't include tonearms, either, on the assumption the buyer want to pick his own.) Good brand names for cartridges include Shure, Ortofon, and Sumiko. Make sure the cartridge has an elliptical (not spherical) stylus. Proper cartridge installation and alignment is not a job for first-timers. You need special equipment to ensure the stylus tip is in the right place at the right angle. So part of buying a turntable is specifying a cartridge and having your audio shop install it for you.

Unless your receiver or pre-processor has a dedicated phono input stage, you will need one of those as well. Many modern receivers leave out the phono stage on the assumption that most buyers don't use phono anymore. Phono signals direct from the cartridge are too low level to be amplified directly by a receiver, so you need a special preamp called a phono stage between the turntable and the receiver.

Since Plasma TV's are temperature sensitive, some of them suffer performance problems at high altitudes. Although some manufactures produce plasma TV's that are compatible with high altitudes, but they are more expensive that standard made plasma TV's.

The average screen size of plasma TV's vary from 32 inches to 63 inches, with a 160-degree angle of viewing. LCD TV's are able to maintain their option levels in well-lit rooms, as they do not reflect much light. LCD TV's also run cooler than plasma TV's.

Most consumers are satisfied with the quality of brightness of both plasma and LCD TV's. As far as thickness of the screens, a plasma screen can be as thin as three inches and an LCD screen can be as thin as two inches.

The estimated life span of plasma and LCD TV's seem to be a length of 15 years and up with normal viewing habits.

DLP TV's are usually less expensive than LCD or plasma TV's and they also have the advantage of creating the best quality of picture. DLP TV is also able to HDTV at its fullest resolution. Moreover, they usually do not require maintenance. However, there have been noticeable rainbow effects in the DLP components that employ certain color wheels, as well as DLP having a limit of angle view.
