what is the best way to do a home theater?

I would like to set up a home theater and I dont know much about projectors so I was wondering would it be better to buy a 1080p 42 inch television for $800 or for about that I can get a 1080p Projector with 1500-2000 lumens for about that which would be about 80 inch for where i will put it. so my question i guess is is the quility of an HD projector as good as an LCD Television? and how mant lumens should a projector have? I dont know what a lumen is other than its the brightness)

Projectors need a light controlled room. That meaning lights that can dim and heavy curtains on windows that block out sunlight. If you don't have that then LCD or Plasma is the way to go. They are a lot more visible in a bright room and maintain their contrast and black levels. Projectors in a fully lit room don't look the greatest.

To gauge how bright you need your projector to be you first need to know how much ambient light you will have/want in the room. No matter what though, sunlight shining on the screen will make it unwatchable. Even moderate sunlight int he room has a tendency to wash out the screen.

1500-2000 lumens is pretty bright for a home theater projector. In actual fact though at the maximum brightness they don't look too good. The colors are not as accurate and the contrast ratio and black levels are very reduced. Most "theater light modes" on projectors (gives best quality) are between 300 and 400 lumens. So to get the best picture the lights need to be pretty dim and there can't be too much ambient light.

I have a 1400 lumen projector (the Epson 550) and a 92" white laminate screen. I can have my recessed lights at 25% in theater mode and still have an adequate image. It looks much better when it's totally dark or when lights are at 10% however.

The size of screen depends on how close you want to sit to the screen. They say that 1.5X the screen width is the ideal seat position. So a 42" screen (36" wide) you would sit about 4.5 feet back. On an 80" projection screen you would sit back about 9 feet. Any closer and it would feel like sitting in the front row of a theater (neck strain).

A quality projector in a good room is a very pleasing experience. If you like watching movies and love a big screen then nothing beats a projector for the look and feel of a real movie theater.

Toddler_o_Geek and I danced until bedtime Sunday night.

We started out with Gnarls Barkley (didn’t get us moving) and quickly switched to Futureheads. I pogoed, my daughter stomped. I made the mistake of pogoing toward her instead of just side to side, we then went into full chase mode—I was still dancing (a series of spastic kicks, arms flailing and hopping like a frog) and she screamed around the room as fast as she can navigate the furniture. We got through “Alms” before bathtime (I was freaking her out with my expert lip-synching at this point).

I can enjoy myself while dancing because I donÂ’t have to wonder if the music sounds good or not. I donÂ’t have to go upstairs to find a new CD in my armoire and then eject the playing CD and load the new one. My musical desires are answered by pressing left, up, right, down and X. I control my whole music collection through my Sony PSP and Coverbuddy on my Mac Mini. Convenience and fun overshadow audiophilia and tweaking. My initial experience with this music server wasnÂ’t as fun.

I mentioned in the last wiring post that my Taddeo Digital Antidote, while great for CD playback, maimed the Airtunes signal. At first, I thought the Airtunes stream was fundamentally flawed (we are dealing with MP3 and AAC playback in a hi-fi system). Then I had the good fortune to listen to one of Steve Albini’s best engineered albums, Bedhead’s Transaction De Novo. The first track, “Exhume,” begins with long, droning electric bass notes. As I have heard the song many times through headphones and original CD I knew the notes should decay smoothly. With the Taddeo in the signal path the bass decay oscillated. This obvious aberration in the song forced me to take the Taddeo out of the signal path, resulting in a direct link between my Onkyo AV Receiver and my Rogue preamp. Without the Taddeo the bass line cleared up along with the rest of the instruments and voices.

Now sure of the cleanest path from Airtunes to my listening roomÂ’s loudspeakers, I got down to serious listening.

I ripped Shellac’s At Action Park to Apple Lossless (I had to rename the album so the songs didn’t get mixed up with my previous AAC MP4 files of the same album). I listened to “My Black Ass” first through Airtunes with Apple Lossless, AAC and then through my CD player, a Pioneer DV47ai.

What I heard:

* Apple Lossless: Tight bass, good image depth, separation of instruments, cymbals splashy, no sibilance, could follow bass line, Steve AlbiniÂ’s annoying effect guitar (his words) not fatiguing

* AAC 128: Slightly more monotone, like voice bass guitar and drum kit flat in smae image space, cymbals more controlled and less live, bass drum muted, some sibilance

* CD: Best separation of instruments—voice and guitar well in front of drum kit with bass behind to the right; no noticeable sibilance, snare drum tight and real, cymbals appear in image space as 3D saucers when struck by drum sticks, bass drum kicks

The differences may have more to do with my CD playerÂ’s DAC (Burr Brown 192k Chip) versus the OnkyoÂ’s WRAT DAC than differences between the original CD versus Apple Lossless. (This album still sounds best on vinyl.)

I would hate it if the Airtunes signal beat out my CD signal, the latter a much bigger investment. It’s amazing it comes so close. The neck and neck race makes you wonder what determines the music that gets to your ears—DAC, jitter, cables, static, wobbly discs? The tweaker’s reported drawbacks of CD drag it back toward the music server sound quality.

Convenience is the biggest benefit of a music server system. Once set up properly (hopefully you have good idea by now) Airtunes run through high end electronics rocks.

If you want your music server to output the highest quality signal, rip all your better recorded CDs to Apple Lossless, buy a nice DAC (like Musical FidelityÂ’s X-DAC v3 or get by with whatever is in your digital processor) and relax in your sweet spot.

If you want to dance the night away with your wife and daughter, hop around to your AACs and MP3s, Sony PSP/Coverbuddy remote control in hand.

The former is a lonely experience. The family had more fun with the latter.

If you are putting together a home theater system and have already purchased a projector, you are now ready to buy a screen. While a variety of screens are out on the market to choose from, they can be classified into three basic categories.

Fixed Screen

does anyone know where to get a new ballast for an RCA DLP HDTV (Hd50Lpw175)? or how much one might cost?

I think I have one in stock, I will need to check in the morning. Can you wait til I check. Otherwise call Andrews electronics at 1-800-289-0300 and give them the model and what part you need, they'll take it from there. I will check in the morning, I think the one I have is for the model you have....is your lamp a type A or B it will say near here the part number for the lamp is. I do not know the pricing, I would need to be in the shop to look all this up.

LCD Projector price? Its a Sanyo XP30....retail was $7,500 how much should i sell it for??!!?

Hey people, I have a Sanyo PLC-XP30 LCD projector (XGA 1024x768), 3000 ANSI LUMENS, DVI all the good things

I have somewhat the same dilemma (a Canon SX-60 (LCoS 1440x1050, 2500 lumens) still under warranty that originally sold in 2006 for over $5000 ... that, to date, I haven't been able to sell at $1500 (with a new $500 lamp), even though it was still sold new until recently at over $3000. I'm obviously going to have to sell for less).

The problem is that projectors have dropped radically in price AND quality has improved (higher contrast ratio, better LCD panels). As a result a projector such as yours, that sold for $7500, can now be replaced with a new projector with similar specs for under $1000 (See link).

Sure, yours may be better built and may have superior features in some ways ... but a new projector with similar resolution and brightness with a warranty for $900 is going to be an easier sell than even $1000 for yours. The advantage the newer ones have is incorporation of newer materials and knowledge learned in earlier models that doesn't have to be paid for out of the sale price of the new model.

Ultimately the price you can sell it for will be whatever you can get, but I'd be surprised if you can sell for more than $1000.

use a roll up window blind for projector screen?

has anyone used a window blind (the roll up ones) for a screen for a projector?

i used one for about 6 months the best ones are the total blockout blinds and use it in reverse!
the picture was fine but after a while the edges of the blind start curling and distorts the picture a little.
amazon do some cheap electical screens check the ones called (vivo mounts)

I have a projection screen that is Radio Frequency(RF) and I would like to convert it to Infared(IR)?

I just got a projection screen that is motorized with an RF remote and found out that it cannot sync with my Harmony 1000 Remote control. I would like to know if there is a way to change it to Infared or to connect it to my Harmony 1000.

When you connect the IR receiver you must skip the RF receiver!

Few things are more exciting and rewarding than building something that really works. Most kids love the challenge of building their own electronic devices, whether it's a simple robot or a bedroom alarm to keep out little siblings.

Various electronic kits are available, and the potential benefits go beyond the finished product. For a start, it's a hands-on opportunity to become familiar with some terminology. By high school, science classes often include an introduction to electronics concepts, including circuit diagrams, resistors, and diodes. Kids who build electronics learn about basic physics, electricity, and how electronic devices work.

These are pretty challenging abstract concepts, which can be brought to life by using electronic kits to connect the right parts. For instance, rather than looking at a computer and seeing only a box with a screen, electronics enthusiasts can get their hands on real parts to help them see and better understand the inner workings and infinite expansion possibilities.

Electronic kits contain multiple parts, diagrams, and instructions. To be successful and create a working device, kids need to follow instructions systematically. Starting with electronic kits for beginners, there are multiple levels of difficulty to explore. Kids learn how to read instructions carefully and how to interpret schematic diagrams, developing both spatial and logical skills.

Building electronics requires persistence and patience. Starting with simpler kits allows these skills to be learned gradually. Snap-together versions are more gratifying for beginners, who are getting accustomed to the parts and language. Later, more difficult assemblies become interesting.

What is the first step in installing a home theater? I plan on including:

Based on just your list, assuming you've already wired, the order doesn't make a lot of different. Here's a couple things to consider first, that aren't on your list:

Since you have a dedicated room to work with, you have some considerations before fixing your final design. The difference between a good theater and an amazing theater is 50% room and 50% equipment.

Decisions to make:

1. Sound proofing. If the room is big enough you can build a room within your room by staggering new studwalls, floor and ceiling and placing special material between the walls. Floors are suspended much like motor mounts in a car.

2. Splaying the side walls. If you build an inner-room you should make the side walls unparallel. A 20 foot deep room should be two feet wider at the back as a minimum.

3. Breaking up the ceiling. Whether you build an inner room or not, you should change the shape of the ceiling from flat to? I like to build a lattice framework that looks like the swells of a wave from below, and then have it drywalled, but there are endless possibilities here. My curved ceiling hangs from the actual ceiling and doesn't extend to the walls in any direction. This allows for stunning lighting designs.

4. Raised seating. If you are planning rows, you will want to pick your seat now so the proper wires can be installed for hardwire control from Crestron, AMX, etc... Best choice is to have your eyes even with the center of the screen vertically and horizontally. If you're married, you might want to split the difference and share the best seating position.

5. Before any construction begins, equipment should be chosen so the correct wiring cna be installed in the walls. I would not use 16/2 or 16/4 in a dedicated theater. That's surround family room wire. I would recommend 12 or 14 gauge non oxydizing high strand count speaker wire.

6. The most important components in any system are the speakers, the display and the remote control. Those are the items that we interface with and hence will show the best return for dollar spent. The rack full of boxes is far more forgiving than mediocre interface devices!

7. Projectors and screens are available now that will adjust to the full width of a 2.35:1 motion picture and the films can be displayed at 24 fps, just like at the theater. This is a substantial improvement over standard 16:9 fixed with 30 fps limitation. Several companies are making projectors like this now. I like Runco, Vidicron and JVC with anamorphic lenses.

8. Speakers can be hidden behind a faux front wall, even if you don't build an inner room. Side and rear speakers can be hidden in architectural detail walls. Picking speakers is far more complex than I can write about here.

9. Controlling a theater can be a nightmare or a breeze. It all depends on the control system and the programmer. Today, I would choose between Crestron, AMX or LifeWare. There are less costly, lower performance options such as RTI, Pronto, Nevo which work pretty well.

10. Separate processors and amplifiers are great but I've had good luck with high end receivers from Yamaha, Marantz and PioneerElite also, and they cost less money. Depending on the rest of your theater, you might even be able to use Marantz's lower end line, Denon.

11. Cables don't have to be the very best, but don't buy the bargain basement stuff either. I use Ethereal for lower cost installations and Tributaries in nicer rooms.

12. Regardless of the theater you design, hire a professional for room accoustics, sound calibration and display calibration to SMPTE standards. An ISF certified tech is adequate for display, HAA certifed tech is okay and afforable for accoustics and a THX level 2 tech will be qualified to calibrate the audio. NOTE: Room accoustics costs the most, and is the most valuable!

any one hear about Sony wide screen rear projection tv parts that are defective and Sony will not fix?

my 52 inch wide screen projection is broken and Sony is refusing to pay for it. I've had a certified trechnician look at it and he said that the 3 color tube crt are defective and would cost me $1,000 to fix it and would leave me without the use of the tv for over a month..and if they did fix it there is no way to tell if the other tubes would break as well costing the same if not more money..we paid $2,600 dollar and it has only worked for 2 1/2 years...The problem is the replacement parts have all been used up and basically Sony would have to rebuild the TV costing them a lots of money

Dan, honest opinion, you are probably better off buying a new one. You have spent so much time and money already, a little more and you can afford a huge plasme screen, good luck
