What is the difference in video quality from HDMI DVD player versus Progressive Scan Player?

I have an HDTV and looking for a new DVD player. How does the picture quality on a progressive scan DVD player compare with one of the new HDMI DVD players? Will the HDMI produce near-HD quality? Is it worth the extra $100-200 for the player and the special cable?

Progressive scan refers to the way the image is displayed. The image is non-interlaced providing a sharper image quality and is not directly related to HDMI, HDMI is the video connection.

HDMI is a high definition output provided by some DVD players, especially high end ones. HDMI is an all digital output again that preserves image quality. The competitor to HDMI is DVI which is similar in that, it too outputs an all digital signal.

There are two types of HDMI, type A is backwards compatible with DVI, type B HDMI is designed to support image resolutions higher than 1080p which is where most high definition TVs max out.

Basically what I'm saying is that progressive scan is how the image is displayed and HDMI is the output signal, the two combined together provide the best image quality.

Whether you use DVI or HDMI is of almost no consequence but you will want to pick one or the other (or whichever one is supported on your TV).

Let me try this again, any DVD player equipped with HDMI outputs will support progressive scan and the same goes for a player that has a DVI video connection.

Yes, it is worth the extra cables and player price.

project board and pcb?

i have a stepper motor with its deriving circuit
on the project power, the circuit does work with a single power supply (+5 1A), however the same circuit on PCB doesn't work with the same power supply, it needs 2 different supplies (+5 1A, and +5 500mA). where +5 1A supply used as motor supply, and +5 500mA used for the deriving circuit
i want to know why, and how to solve this problem

There is a good reason for the two supplies, even though the voltage is the same.

The stepper motor is driven with pulses that have a very high dv/dt (due to MOSFET switching, which is common for these circuits). So every time the motor driver activates, a sharp current spike is produced and the supply voltage undergoes a similar small negative voltage spike, large enough to confuse your driver logic.

In theory, you could power both from the same source, but practically you will find it VERY difficult to provide the clean voltage that your control circuit needs, while the power driver is causing the supply to vacillate.

The best way to do this with one supply is to have a power source with much more capacity (stiffer) than what is just sufficient for the combined loads, and then heavily filtered with high-frequency devices, that are carefully placed in the circuit to maintain a minimum of ESR.

It is usually cheaper to have two smaller supplies.

With the increasing popularity of HDTV, watching a DVD movie at home is a great entertainment experience. The picture is sharp, clear, and vibrant. But what about the sound? After all, that is one of the real attractions of going to a movie theater, the wraparound sound that lets you hear every detail. So is there a way to bring that kind of audio into our homes too? Absolutely!

Actually surround sound has been around for a while now in one form or another, but it just never had a platform to bring it into the mainstream before HDTV and digital media like the DVD became so prevalent. But now by combining the right equipment, a person can actually very closely simulate the movie theater experience right in the comfort of their home whenever they want.

For surround sound, you will need three things, (1) a digital source that has surround sound already encoded into it such as a DVD or a HDTV broadcast, (2) equipment to decode that surround sound signal, and (3) at least 6 speakers including a subwoofer to take full advantage of the most popular 5.1 surround sound format. It's called 5.1 because it use 5 channels of sound to drive 5 separate speakers, and the .1 stands for the low-frequency subwoofer.

Once you have the equipment you need to establish a surround sound setup that will be right for your home. Much of the seating area will be determined by the size and type of TV that you have. If it is a 40" HDTV, which is a very common size, you can probably sit about 5-8 feet away and not notice any degradation in the picture quality. Just experiment with the seating distance until it seems comfortable though. Then the two front speakers usually flank the TV, but make sure that they are wide enough to form a triangle with the seating area so everyone will be in the sound sweet spot.

The two back speakers are often placed somewhere around the seating area and faced either to a side or rear wall. The middle speaker needs to be situated somewhere close to the TV, and the subwoofer can be put anywhere in the room that you like, since it puts out such low frequency bass that seems to come from everywhere.

Every room has different listening characteristics though due to it's configuration and furnishings, so feel free to experiment around until you find the combination that works best for you. A surround sound installation may seem challenging, but it's just simply getting the right equipment and placing the speakers where they produce the best overall sound.

I am sure that at one time or another you have gone to the movies to watch a great movie. I recently purchased a Sharp aquos 42d62u LCD TV and get bad motion blurr on HD sports channels. Any solution

Watching one of the bowl games last night on FOX and it was particularly bad - eventually just tough to watch. Any suggestions??

I own the 64u that has a 4ms response time and have never had any motion blur or ghosting. With your 62u at 6ms you shouldn't be getting any either. I would agree with the others and say it is probably the signal you are receiving. Try another source and see if you have the same issues.

I recommend getting the DVD player separately. A lot of times the DVD player will break before the TV, meaning that you're stuck with repairing it.

Since you can get a DVD player for cheap and just replace it, why be stuck with one inside your TV?

You can get a nice 26" for under $500. Look for one with a PC input, like LG...that way you can hook up your PC when it's time to do some work (yeah right) and you'll have a great PC monitor!

LCD HDTV has become a trend in the home entertainment industry because of its sleek and thin design. It has gained recognition because of its innovative features and impressive picture quality. HDTV manufacturers continue to progress and modify the good features and make it even better. However, regardless of the development, the consumers are given an option to purchase a good LCD HDTV at a very reasonable price, which suits their lifestyle and needs. When you shop for a television, first thing that you would probably ask is the resolution. Nowadays, 1080p resolution is the best for consumer home theater. Some companies promote a 1080i LCD HDTV that has an actual widescreen resolution of 1,366 by 768 pixels, which greatly differs from the 1080p. 1080p resolution has 1,920 by 1,080 pixels.

Sometimes specifications that are worthless like contrast ratio and pixel response time. These specifications are problematic because there are many variations and each is calculated in notably different ways. Sales people tend to focus on whatever specification calculation offers the most impressive looking result.

Regarding pixel response time, what you need to know is if a particular LCD TV is optimized to reduce the smearing of an image when showing a fast motion video. Currently, the 120-Hz display technology is the feature that best addresses this problem. It is a premium LCD feature but its advantages are instantaneously recognizable.

Contrast ratio is the ratio of measured light output when displaying white to its measured light output when displaying video black, also called the black level. There are several types of contrast ratio calculations. These are sequential, intra-frame, and dynamic. But these calculation results are often useless when comparing one LCD HDTV to another. It is better to focus on which model makes the deepest and darkest representation of video black because the LCD TV that has a darker black level has the more detailed, enhanced saturation, and more appealing image.

An LCD HDTV screen can produce more than twice the light output of a Plasma TV. The extra brightness that an LCD HDTV can provide helps in maintaining picture detail by improving the dynamic range of the image in a well-lit environment. To minimize distracting light reflections, a lot of LCD HDTVs have a matte finish. However, there are some new LCD HDTVs that are incorporating glossy top filters that enhance apparent contrast and color saturation by making video black appear pitch-black dark. Glossy LCD screens make a slightly crispier picture than a matte finished outside filter can produce.

An LCD TV produces a picture by channeling the output of a very bright backlighting system through a series of optical filters. The capacity to control an LCD TV's backlight can help minimize eyestrain in a dark viewing environment. In addition, the brightness level of an LCD HDTV's backlight correlates to its power consumption. Lower backlight output to dark-room viewing levels can result in one-half to two-third less power consumed. Also, lower backlighting extends the lifespan of the lamp module.

Lastly, you should consider video port needs, particularly HDMI. High-Definition Multimedia Interface is the standard for digital video transfer in home-theater. The main benefits are the clarity of a digital signal and the audio and video that are streamed over a single cable connection. Common appliances that can be connected to an LCD HDTV through HDMI are DVD players and game consoles. Most LCD HDTV provides two to four ports.

Look for these different features when you are purchasing an LCD HDTV. This technical knowledge will help you decide which LCD HDTV meets your needs.

When you walk into the home theatre system area of your local consumer electronics outlet, the multitude of choices are daunting. Everything is gleaming under the fluorescent lights, very new and very shiny, each system seemingly saying "buy me, buy me". Before you get to that point, there are many things you need to understand and realize to help you make the best possible decision for your home and your wallet.

First you need to determine which room of your home will house this home theatre system. Note that if you are going for the very large screen like 50 or 60 inches or more, the best viewing is from about 10 to 12 feet away. So putting a screen of this size into a small room is going to disappoint you because the screen will not look sharp or crisp. On the other hand, if you go with a smaller screen like a 36 or 42 inch screen, this would be adequate for a small family room or even a larger bedroom.

You need to decide on what type of display you want. LCD and plasma displays will provide the clearest and sharpest images. DLP and rear projection systems can cost less, but a major disadvantage in these systems is the viewing angle -- DLP and rear projection do not provide as clear a picture when viewing the screen from an angle. Again, examine your target room where your system will be located, and determine the typical viewing angle for the viewers which should help you decide the best display technology to use.

Another important component is the receiver. Some receivers for home theatre systems have inputs for your cable TV or satellite dish connection, as well as inputs for a variety of other things, such as your DVD player, your VCR, your surround sound system, and perhaps even a PC input. Some even have a built-in radio, although these are becoming less common. One of the newer additions to receivers is the ability to play XM radio, although XM radio will require a monthly subscription. So with all these choices, you need to evaluate what is important to you, as well as what you will actually USE. There is little sense, for example, in equipping the receiver with XM radio if you will never or rarely use that option.

No home theatre system is complete without a good speaker system. Ideally, the surround sound should be Dolby 7.1 or at least Dolby 5.1. If you are going to spend the money on a great home theatre system, it makes little sense to "cheap out" with the speakers and audio system, since after the picture, the SOUND is the other component that lights up your internal sensory perceptors as you are enjoying your system. You can even go the extra mile with your surround sound system if you want to go whole hog, and use the "bass shaker" attachments that are available with some systems. These gadgets attach to your recliner or sofa, and when a scene comes on with an explosion or car wreck, these gadgets actually SHAKE the recliner or sofa, adding to the realism of the movie.

I suggest you make yourself a list, or maybe even a paper spreadsheet that you take with you when you shop around. Put a column for must-have features, a column for nice-to-have features, and perhaps yet another column for a feature you find that is specific to a particular brand. And definitely SHOP AROUND for your home theatre system! Create a budget for yourself that will NOT be exceeded, regardless of how loudly a particular system is screaming at you to buy it. Watch for systems to go on sale, which they do on a frequent basis, and you can save yourself a wad of cash. If you are buying the components separately, my recommendation would be to buy them all from the same store. That way if there is a problem, you will not have the issue of "finger pointing" from the various stores trying to blame each other.

The smart shopper is the one who gets the quality system and doesn't pay "sticker price" for it. Be informed, know what you want, be willing to learn if you run across an intelligent salesperson who knows what he is talking about, and stick to your budget. You will be able to enjoy your investment in this superb home theatre system for years to come.
