Mounting ceiling speakers in a wall?

I have a 7.1 surround sound receiver. I bought a 5.1 speaker set and am buying 2 additional speakers for the middle satellite speakers. I need in-wall speakers for logistic reasons. Most of the in-wall speakers are too big for the location I need but the round shape of the in-ceiling speakers would work.

I did the same thing using a 9.1 system. Basically make sure of the depth of the wall. Some inner walls are not deep enough to accommodate the speaker. I used Polk, a little more expensive but the end result was satisfying considering that you don't want to be cutting into your drywall and running cable more than once.

how can I hook my in-wall speakers to my computer so I can play Mp3's throughout my house?

I'm going to put about 4 speakers mounted flush in my ceiling and about 3 outdoors on my back patio. This is what I want. I want to be able to play Mp3's from my computer and it play through those speakers. Is there a better way of doing this? What will it cost? Any recommendations? Are there any ALL-IN-ONE type packages for this? I don't have the speakers, wire or anything yet. Just trying to get it all together. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Most speakers will be able to plug into the headphone jack in the audio card. Wires are dirt cheap, and speakers cost what they do. It depends on the speakers. Just make sure they have a 3.5 mm headphone jack.

There are many good in wall speakers. Paradigm is a good speaker for the price. Stay away from the mass market brands (pioneer, sony, etc) if you want real quality. Klipsch, definitive technology, schnell, M & K are all very good as well. I suggest you visit as many audio/home theater stores to listen for yourself. Everyone has their own preference.

A recent trend in home cinemas is the use of both "in wall" and even "in ceiling speakers" that offer the listener the benefit of an extra dimension in their audio listening experience, while storing the satellite speakers themselves out of sight and out of mind. The appeal of having speakers mounted in wall cavities is particularly appealing in modern apartments where a minimalist approach is applied. The fact is that without encroaching on space, some fantastic results are possible and are well within the means of the average home cinema owner.

Unlike a normal speaker that is mounted in a cabinet, the diver of an in-wall or in-ceiling speaker is mounted in a frame that is set into the wall directly. What often happens is that you receive additional bass from the wall itself that would be missing from a speaker of the same size. The only difference between an in-ceiling speaker and an in-wall speaker is that the in-wall speaker is positioned in the wall and the in-ceiling speaker, the ceiling above. Plasma TV Owners: How did you brace your wall to hang the unit?

I recently got a 50" Panasonic Plasma TV (TH-50PX60U) with a Sanus Flat Panel TV Mount (VMSAs) that tilts, swivels, and pans. The instruction manual with the tv mount says the wall should be able to handle 5 times the weight of the plasma tv plus the weight of the actual mount. That is roughly 550 pounds. How in the world do I beef up my wall to safely handle that? We live in an old house with plaster walls and I would like to hang it above the fireplace. Can you give me any advice? Thank you!

First things first, I seriously doubt that the mfg. of the TV will warrant the TV if you hang it over a fireplace. I know you see all those pretty pics of TVs over fireplaces but they cannot handle the heat, most have an automatic shut off when they reach a certain temp.

The const of the wall around your fireplace may not have wood studs, hopefully it does, you must locate those studs and the weight you are talking about you will need to hit three studs with a wall bracket and that bracket will need to be bolted to the studs with at least two 3" lag bolts on each stud.

The lath on the wall is probably wood lath over which the plaster was spread, I've seen situations where the homeowner opened the wall to expose the studs and then attached 3/4" plywood to the studs to this they could bolt the mounting bracket distributing the load over the studs. This plywood could then be finished out to match the wall.

Again- carefully consider the mfg. recommendations regarding fireplaces.

A home theater needs to be functional before it's anything else. Those who have put in the expense to build a "theater" in their home need to be sure the sound and visual and placement of seating is just right before they'll delve into decorating, but when that time comes, there are some tips to add to the room aesthetically without taking away any of the functionality.

A room of this sort is bound to have floor speakers, and speakers that surround your peripherals and centrally located speakers for both the front and back of the sitting area. In some of the newer homes or the more expensive remodels, some, if not all, of these speakers may be placed in the walls of the home. Yet usually the floor speakers will remain out and near the television. The tops of which may be a prime opportunity for knickknacks when decorating. There may be shelving on the walls in this room for speakers or for remote controls. Those shelves are also a great place for decorative touches.

A typical theater room is designed something like this: The television is centrally located either mounted on the wall or standing just in front of it. There are floor speakers on either side of the television and another smaller speaker centrally located above the TV. There will be more speakers either mounted or on stands placed on either side of the seating area and one more speaker centrally located behind the seating area. Finally, there will be a special speaker called a subwoofer placed somewhere to the side of the seating area. The seating area is located around what some refer to as the "sweet spot" because during the action scenes in intense movies when the music swells, the vibrations of that sound are felt in the seating area. All of this is necessary for the functionality of the theater room. What's left is what you have to decorate.

In order to keep the functionality of a theater room, you must realize that the room needs to be dark. This is no room for growing plants or bright colors painted on the wall. Rich earthy tones will work here. Along with this, keep knickknacks to a minimum. This room is for viewing the television, not your china collection. Do not place fragile things in this room. There will be much vibration in this room and that may cause a fragile item to fall from its perch and break. Keep your decor simple here. Use rugs to add color to the room and hang pictures to add depth to the walls. Do not clutter up this room with much more than this.

Before anything else, a home theater needs to be functional. If you'll also entertain in this room, keep your decor to a minimum and use unbreakable items. Add color through the means discussed above and be okay with a sparsely decorated room. It will provide much enjoyment and sometimes simple really is best.

Home theater in-wall speaker wire??

If bought a Harman Kardon 6.1 surround system and I got wiring through the walls but the wires run in the same pipe as the A/C wires, I've read many articles, ones say there shouldn't be any problem as the speaker cables carry strong signals a thus are not affected by the interference from A/C wire but others say they are affected and in order to avoid interference they must be placed at least 16 inches from each other. I'm really confused, I would like to know what can I do, is there going to be any problem, should I run new ducts through the wall or can it be fixed just with switching to shielded wire??

I'm curious why your speaker wires are running inside pipes in your walls, that's strange for a residence. Generally you want your speaker wires to cross any AC lines perpendicularly to reduce any interference, but the best judge of whether there is a problem is your ears. It won't hurt your new system to try out the speakers, so long as you are sure you are plugging in the speaker wires and not an AC live wire (but you'd probably figure that out long before you got it near your stereo!). Take a listen, if there is a noticible hiss or distortion you'll probably want to re-run the wires inside the wall away from any AC lines, you can tell this by looking for any outlets or switches nearby.

Ceiling / wall speakers acoustic performance?

I heard that when mounting ceiling or wall speakers you'll get better sound acoustics and speaker performance if you insert insulation or some other type of baffeling material to help tune the speaker. Anyone ever tried this? Does it help?

Yes, In most cases it should help. Check the recommendations of the manufacturer. Some speakers are designed to work in open spaces. Most in walls are designed to work IN walls.
If it is new construction I usually build a box 1ft X the width of stud or joist out of MDF (medium density fiberboard) Then I caulk the box and put insulation inside it. This will dampen resonance and inhibit the sound from traveling up into the attic or walls, and coming out into nearby rooms.

You will also want to put a protective cloth around the speaker if it is going to be exposed to any loose insulation. Better yet is to use a rear baffle. This is a must if you have blown in insulation in your ceiling. Many inwall/ceiling speaker manufacturers make these. You can find them online at Partexpress.com. or check with the manufacturer of the speakers you are buying to see if they make them.

We have all entered into offices or homes and been entertained by soothing musical melodies that seem to be emanating from invisible speakers. Because of the surround sound effect, we get to hear music in all its effects but cannot pinpoint the exact location of the said speakers. This is done deliberately by using in wall speakers. These are the next generation speakers that are well concealed either in the wall paneling, inside the roof ceiling or even behind furniture. All in all, expect to see in-wall furniture in many offices in the future. These speakers can easily be purchases in any home theater store or electronics store. The chances are if the store stocks electronic products, it will stock in-wall speakers. There is an increasingly large number of people who buy the speakers online at places such as ubid.com, ebay.com and others. This is because when shopping online you can read reviews and you can also do a price comparison, something you cannot do with regular shopping.
