Weatherproof Speakers

Portable gazebos are very much in demand during the rainy spring and fall, as well as during the hot days of summer. If you were going to have an outdoor event such as a wedding, graduation, or concert just to name a few examples, you would be advised to have a portable gazebo ready and waiting to provide shelter. Or, maybe you live on a small suburban property or in a city brownstone with a courtyard garden and really want some privacy. A portable gazebo, or shade canopy can be set up for the summer in your garden or lawn to create your outdoor living room.

Portable gazebos are made to provide shade from the hot sun and it's harmful UV rays as well as to provide shelter from the wind and rain. There are portable gazebos made for vendors to use at festivals and street fairs and conventions. There are gazebos with clear plastic sides made just for growing plants, which can be dismantled for the winter. These types of portable gazebos are designed to be little huts with four or more support poles and a framework roof covered with a canopy.

Portable gazebos come in a variety of geometric shapes, such as squares, rectangles, hexagons, and trapezoids. They are freestanding, therefore different from awnings and shades. Portable gazebos are not able to hold up to snow or heavy weather but can usually be left up for the late spring, summer, and early fall.

Canopy: The best portable gazebos are covered with a canopy made from either specially engineered mesh fabrics like canvas and polyethylene that are designed to provide shade, UV protection, and wind protection, or a canopy of waterproof silver coated polyester, or heavy duty marine vinyl for rain protection. Some good quality shade canopies are made with fabrics from companies like Coolaroo, Sunbrella, and Synthesis.

Frame: A large portable gazebo will require that you get a sturdy frame made from galvanized steel tubing or furniture grade PVC pipe. There should be an internal cross frame section to prevent the gazebo from collapsing inward. Smaller gazebos that you can pack up for a day at the beach should be made of good quality, lightweight aluminum. Pop up portable gazebos may seem convenient, but make sure that you know how to fold the thing back up into it's carrying case!  One person can put up these smallest size gazebos, but bigger ones need at least two people to set up and take down.

You can customize your gazebo with additional options like mosquito netting and wind and waterproof side panels complete with clear plastic 'windows'. Your portable gazebo doesn't have to just look functional; it can be decorated with fabrics, garlands, potted plants and outdoor string lights. Feel free to set up an outdoor dining table and chairs, lounge furniture, and even a music system in your waterproof gazebo. And, just to add to your fun, you can get water-misting systems to install in your portable gazebo for cooling off in torrid weather. Don't let the crazy weather control your outdoor activities! Inline speaker switch?

I have 4 outdoor speakers around my pool. I would like to add a 5th into a Gazebo. I am running the necessary wires for this new speaker and thought that I would like the ability to shut this one speaker off while the stereo is on.

I went to radio shack and could not find anything to accomplish this. I asked the salesman there and he said I couldnt do it because the speakers are not powered (only power coming from the speaker wire itself) - I think he was nuts because then in the same breath he recommended I go with an AB Switch to have the ability to shut this one speaker off but it was obviously not weatherproof and it was about half the size of a shoe box.

Is there any sort of switch I can place in line to shut this one speaker off?

Radio Shack employs sales men, not technicians. In fairness, I do have to say that they do know what they're talking about. Unfortunately, most of what they know just isn't true. I had one tell me that fuses could be open, but there was no test to determine if a fuse might be shorted. (Tell ya what, slick, if it's shorted, I can live with it, okay?)

Anyway, switches serve more purposes than routing line voltage to equipment. One of those purposes can very well be to interrupt the audio feed to a speaker. Unfortunately, a ready-made switch with connectors aren't in much demand so they're not really available, You'd have to build your own.

What I think he tried to talk you into was an A/V switch which consists of a video and L/R audio connectors. Kind of a waste of a lot of connections and, like you said, not weatherproof.

The other thing to keep in mind, though, is the changing impedance to your amplifier system by switching a speaker in and out of the system, unless you're using a 70v speaker system.
